The first BS and MS degrees were awarded in 1917. In 1939, the program was reorganized as the Department of Forestry which in 1947 became the School of Forestry. A Ph.D. program was added in 1960. In 1969, the MS and Ph.D. programs in forestry were broadened and replaced by a graduate program in Wildland Resource Science; the professional Master of Forestry degree (MF) remained separate. In 1974, the School of Forestry and the College of Agricultural Sciences merged to become the College of Natural Resources (CNR) with much of the forestry research and teaching residing in a new Department of Forestry and Resource Management. The professionally accredited program in forestry continued throughout this entire period. In 1992 the College of Natural Resources reorganized again, setting up four departments with much of the forestry program in a large, new Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM). A new graduate program called Environmental Science, Policy and Management replaced Wildland Resource Science. After several reorganizations of ESPM the department now includes four divisions: Forest Science, Ecosystem Science, Resource Institutions Policy and Management, and Insect Biology. Requires $20 fee to cover cost of transportation for field trips. Prerequisite: Plant Biology 200. Student Objectives: Identify at least 80-100 angiosperm trees, shrubs, and vines by various characteristics. Provide the family, genus, specific epithet, and common name for each quiz specimen. Identify the correct terminology for various plant components including leaf shapes, fruit types and other structures. Course Format: Course will be conducted primarily outdoors rain or shine. Approximately 10 new species of plants will be introduced each class session. Quizzes will be held weekly. Quiz specimens will come from the pool of species introduced in previous class sessions. Sharing of personal observations during tree introductions is encouraged. Please note that the wooded areas we will be visiting may contain poison ivy and various thorny plants so wear appropriate clothing such as long pants, raincoats, and boots for various field and climatic conditions. A large clear plastic bag slipped over a clipboard is crucial for note taking and quizzes on damp mornings or rainy days. Use of a #1 or #2 pencil is best especially for writing on damp paper during rainy days.
