The purpose of the project is to develop a model Delaware school library that demonstrates best practices of the library profession and its impact on education and student achievement. Tony Marchio, Superintendant, was the recipient of the 1999 Administrator's Award for Excellence presented by the Delaware School Library Media Association (DSLMA), a division of the Delaware Library Association. Through his leadership, Appoquinimink School District has demonstrated awareness of the essential contribution of school library media centers to excellence in education through the provision of a full-time certified librarian and flexibile scheduling in each of the elementary schools. Townsend Elementary School was selected as the demonstration site for the Delaware Exemplary School Library Project due to their progress on a combination of factors including the size of the facility, use of technology, age and size of the collection, and the integration of information literacy skills into the curriculum. Dr. Sandra Cohee, Principal, Ann Thomas, Assistant Principal, and Courtney Kaczka, Librarian, are commended for their visionary leadership in developing a quality school library program which supports the needs of the students, teachers, and the school community.
