Extractions: Anderson after John Reid. "The States of Maryland and Delaware from the latest Surveys." From John Payne's Universal Geography An early American produced map of Maryland and Delaware, published at the end of the eighteenth century. The map is quite detailed, and it shows and names the towns and counties. The road system is clearly delineated, and the bay, mountains, and rivers are also indicated. The map is a reduced copy of the John Reid's map of 1796, nicely engraved by Scoles. This is an excellent item of eighteenth century Americana. Anthony Finley. "Delaware." From A New General Atlas In the 1820s, Anthony Finley produced a series of fine atlases in the then leading American cartographic center, Philadelphia. Finley's work is a good example of the quality that American publishers were beginning to obtain in the second decade of the century. Finley was very concerned to depict as up-to-date information as was possible, and thus his map presents an accurate picture of Delaware in the early 1820s. This map is elegantly presented, with crisp and clear engraving and attractive pastel hand shading. Towns, rivers, and political divisions are indicated, and the road system throughout the state is marked. The hand coloring makes this map as attractive as it is informative.

Guyot, is from Peterman's Geographical Journal and is a detailed engraving of the Allegheny Mountain system from Maine to North Carolina with insets of the White Mountains (New Hampshire) and the Black Mountains (Ashville area of North Carolina). Only geographical features are shown, no state boundaries appear though a few towns are identified. The mountains are shown by intricate etching. Most, but not all, of the map is shown here. COAST SURVEY SKETCH SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY ON THE ATLANTIC GULF OF MEXICO AND PACIFIC COAST OF THE UNITED STATES TO NOVEMBER, 1861, published by the U. S. Coast Survey, A. D. Bache, Supdt. This map is a preliminary draft of the east coast survey with the west coast as an inset. A statistics table gives survey data. These draft maps were prepared periodically and are cruder than a finished map. Maps like this one (but preferably on a larger scale) were in great demand by the Navy who were implementing a southern blockade, and by Confederate smugglers who were trying to evade it. No inland detail is given and only the Pennsylvania region is shown here. Pennsylvania is a coastal state, but just barely. Blank verso. Scale: 1" = 80 miles. Size: 26 x 24 inches.

Extractions: Ask the students to recall that the first settlers traveled on ships to reach the New World and formed colonies along the east coast of what is now the United States. Remind the students that the Atlantic coast also had many bays which made it easy for ships to come close to shore. Ask: What is the definition of a bay? (An inlet of the ocean partly surrounded by land.) Give a map of the New England and Middle Atlantic Colonies to each student. Ask students to name all the colonial cities located on the Atlantic Ocean or a bay (Boston, MA; Plymouth, MA; Baltimore, MD; Williamsburg, VA; Jamestown, VA). Write the name of the city and the colony on the board as students name them. Remind the students that these cities were important in the development of trade because of their closeness to the ocean.
