Extractions: March 05 Volume 35 Issue 10 At its February 21 meeting in Washington, D.C., the Association Board voted on a redistricting plan for electing directors, which will be presented to the members at the Annual Business Meeting in May. The redistricting is part of the downsizing of the Association Board from 21 directors to nine next year. "In streamlining our Board Governance, it only makes sense that the voting districts be made up of counties, rather than chapter areas," commented Norb Kaczmarek, Association Director and Chairman of the Governance Restructure Task Force. Details on the redistricting will be sent to all affiliated credit unions prior to the Annual Convention & Expo at Seven Springs. Association Board Members participated in a special strategic thinking session on cooperation and unity in light of recent banker attacks. Chairman Ron Lasich and President/CEO Jim McCormack led the discussion. "History shows that credit unions pull together in tough times, and now there’s a critical need to cooperate and work together," said Lasich. "The attacks on Pennsylvania are just part of a larger plan by the American Bankers Association on credit unions across the nation." The Association Board also agreed to reaffirm the $250 Pacul Services, Inc., charitable contribution to each chapter. To be eligible to receive the contribution, a request must be submitted to your respective Association Director. The chapter must also make its own contribution.

Extractions: April 2, 2004 Volume 35 Issue 14 Credit unions are on the move, in Pennsylvania and across the nation, growing and prospering to serve their members and reaching out to the underserved. However, this success is again drawing challenges from the bankers. At the national level, the powerful Ways and Means Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives is preparing for hearings to challenge credit union tax exemption. In Pennsylvania, three state-chartered credit unions have filed notice to convert to community charters, using the privileges extended in the State Credit Union Parity legislation passed in 2002. Bankers have challenged all three conversions in the Department of Banking and are intervening in the regulatory process. The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association is asking every affiliated credit union to commit a contribution of seven cents per member ($.07/member) to the Pennsylvania Credit Union Defense Fund. Donations will be used to help fend off banker attacks, to assist with legal costs, the Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) issue, lobbying and/or public relations costs. Protect the future of credit unions with your contribution to the Defense Fund. Checks/share drafts should be made payable to the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association. Extractions: Grapes have long been a favorite fruit of the home gardener. The earliest settlers in the New World found wild grapes thriving along streams and in timbered areas. These were mostly of the species Vites labrusca and V. riparia , while the wine and dessert grapes of the Old World are V. vinifera Although it is not without its challenges, adapted cultivars of grapes can be grown in Nebraska. Many of these are a result of both American and French breeders' efforts to combine the hardiness characteristics of the native American grapes ( V. labrusca V. riparia V. rupestris ) with the high quality inherent to the European ( V. vinifera ) types.
