Like the other Scandinavian languages, Danish is derived from Old Norse, and by the first half of the 12th cent. it could be distinguished from the parent tongue (see Germanic languages Norse ). Between 1100 and 1800 a number of phonological changes took place in Danish, and the grammar became increasingly simple. The spelling and pronunciation of the language began to be standardized c.1700, and a modern standard Danish can be said to have existed since about 1800, although there are still a number of dialects. Danish grammar is comparatively simple. The noun is inflected only to show the possessive and plural forms and has but two genders, neuter and nonneuter (or common). The meaning of nouns that are otherwise the same can depend on gender. For example, when used in the nonneuter or glottal stop, which is a sound that results from the closing and opening of the glottis to expel air. Verbs have no personal inflection. Although the vocabulary of Danish is substantially native, many words have been borrowed from other languages, notably from Low German in the 14th to 16th cent.; from High German, Latin, and French in the 16th to 19th cent.; and from English since the late 19th cent. Because of the large number of similar and identical words in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, a knowledge of any one of these languages makes it possible to understand the spoken and written forms of the other two. Extractions: The Danish Beekeepers´ Association The Danish Beekeepers´Association (Danmarks Biavlerforening) was founded on 5th July 1866. The preamble stated that the aim of the organization was to work for the benefit of beekeeping and especially to introduce the beekeeping method developed by Dzierzon. Right from the beginning much effort was put into informing the public and educating beekeepers. The Danish Bee Journal (Tidsskrift for Biavl) has been published since the very beginning of the organization. Much effort was devoted to advisory work too. Actually, the founder of the organization widely travelled as a beekeeping teacher in Denmark. Things have changed. But the Danish Beekeepers´ Associations have almost retained the same organization as in the early days. Although the sentence in the preamble about Dzierzons method has been taken out, we still aim at working in the member beekeepers interests. The organization is a Federation consisting of 82 local beekeepers´ associations spread all over Denmark. Representatives of the local associations elects the president and six other members of the executive body. The president now is Mr.Verner Schou.. The executive body elects the Vice-president and appoints the General Secretary. ( At present Mr. Asger Søgaard Jørgensen) who works with the advisory service as well.

Danish is now the first foreign language learnt in Iceland. During the Middle Ages, Danish was heavily influenced by Low German dialects, while during the 17th century Danish absorbed many French loanwords and from the 19th century onwards, many English words have been taken into Danish. The first known written language of Scandinavia was Old Norse or the (Danish tongue), which appeared in Runic inscriptions from about 700 AD onwards. Between 800 and 1050 AD a division began to appear between East Norse, which developed into Swedish and Danish, and West Norse, which developed into Norwegian, Faroese and Icelandic. Viking colonisation spread the East Norse dialects to northern England during the 8th and 9th centuries. After 878, England north of a line between Chester and the Thames came under Danish rule and was known as the 'Danelaw'. By 1016, the whole of England and Scotland were under the rule of the Danish King Cnut (Canute), who reined until 1035.

Along with Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic, Danish is part of the Northern Germanic branch that comprises the Scandinavian languages. Danish began to separate from the other Scandinavian languages about 1000 A.D., and it is clearly the language that has diverged the furthest from Old Norse the ancestor of the modern Scandinavian languages. During the Middle Ages, Danish lost the old case system, merged the masculine and feminine genders into a single common one, and acquired many Low German words, prefixes, and suffixes from contact with the traders of the Hanseatic League. The oldest Danish records are runic inscriptions (from 250-800 A.D.) found in sites ranging from Jutland to southern Sweden.
