Extractions: Mark Morris: A biography Praised as a refreshingly irreverent master, sometimes derided as a gimmicky smart-alec, Mark Morris has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading modern dance choreographers. Dance legend Mikhail Baryshnikov has called Morris "one of the great choreographers of our time." The outrageousness that puts off some is matched by a seriousness that critics say cover the human experience and emotional truth. But his style has irked some, and was not always appreciated. His dancers, derided by some critics as "fat," have challenged the dance world's notions of the body. Still, Morris' reputation as the "bad boy" of modern dance has faded in recent years, amid accolades for Morris' "force of imagination" and ability to mix emotions. Born in 1956, Morris first studied dance in his hometown of Seattle, Washington. He developed an interest in a range of music and dance styles, including folk, classical ballet, and modern, which continue to influence his work. Morris moved from Seattle to New York in 1976, and his early career included performing with several groups, including the Koleda Balkan Dance Ensemble, the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Hannah Kahn Dance Company, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, and the Eliot Feld Ballet. At the age of 24, Morris founded the Mark Morris Dance Group with friends and colleagues. The ensemble first performed in 1980 at New York City's Merce Cunningham Studio. Today, the Mark Morris Dance Group boasts a busy international touring schedule and is considered one of the world's leading dance companies. The Dance Group performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for the first of 15 seasons in 1984, had its Kennedy Center debut in 1985 and premiered in Europe and on PBS in 1986. In 1988, Morris was named director of dance at Brussels' Theatre Royal de la Monnaie as the Dance Group was invited for a three-year stint as the national dance company of Belgium.

I have put them on the WWW lest it is of use or of interest to anyone else. I make no guarantees as to the accuracy (these were all written down from life not from canonical reference books). Extractions: Morris dancing is the traditional folk dance of England. Its origins are lost in the mists of time, but written references go back over 500 years. It is mentioned, for example in Shakespear. As far as can be determined, it is not Celtic in origin, and it should not, therefore, be confused with the traditional dances of Scotland, Ireland or Wales. The most widespread and perhaps best known form of Morris dance is the "Cotswold" style, which (as its name implies) originates in the Cotswolds, which is the area including Oxfordshire and surrounding counties. Cotswold Morris dance is ususlly a set dance for six persons. During the dance distinctive dance steps and hand movements are combined with movements of dancers, either in pairs, or as the whole set. The dancers emphasize hand movements with handkerchiefs or wooden sticks. Bells are worn below the knees. Individual styles have been collected from more than 20 different Cotswold villages, with each village having a repetoire of 1-20 dances. Originally, Morris dancers would wear either their "best" clothes, or, if they could afford it, whites. All modern Morris dance sides have distinctive kits, or uniforms, often based on white shirt and trousers, but gaily decorated with ribbons, baldricks, waistcoats etc. Morris dancing is also (more loosely) used to include other traditional English folk dancing such as sword dance, rapper dance, Molly dancing and the clog dances of northern England.

Morris is a term applied, rather loosely, to traditional English folk-dancing that is done as a performance rather than as a social event. There are many kinds of Morris dancing. The Albemarle Morris Men dance a type of Morris called Cotswold Morris, named for the southwestern region of England from which the dancing comes. The origins of the Cotswold Morris are obscure. Some scholars think that Englishmen on crusade in Europe in the 14th century saw, and perhaps participated in a Spanish dance which was a reenactment of the driving of the Moors from Spain, hence the term "Moorish", or "Morris". Morris dancing was incorporated into existing seasonal festivities and was handed down from generation to generation. Many villages in the Cotswold region had their own team or "side" of Morris dancers. The typical arrangement of a team was six all male dancers, one musician, and one or more comic characters such as a fool. The dancers decorated themselves with rosettes, ribbons and/or cross sashes called baldricks; bells were also worn. A combination of the Industrial Revolution and the leveling of the Witchwood Forest in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire resulted in a tremendous destruction of traditional English country life. As a result, Morris dancing had all but died out. Fortunately, the dances were revived by several English antiquarian, most notably Cecil Sharp and Mary Neal. They visited the remaining dancers, who by that time were very old men, and recorded the dance steps and music. Furthermore, they encouraged those handful of sides still dancing to continue.

Morris Dancing is one of the characteristic Folk Dances of England. Though well known during Shakespeare's time, the Industrial Revolution cut into its constituency so that by the turn of the century the Morris was practiced only by a dwindling number of Ale-drinking pensioners in, what some would call, the lesser sophisticated villages of the English Midlands. Discovered in the nick of time by an itinerant ethno-musicologist, Morris Dancing was seen as a hither-to unstudied subject of academic research, and via publications and other means enjoyed a revival in Britain. Morris became a part of the curriculum in schools, new teams were formed, and over the decades it has spread throughout the English-speaking world. Today, the Morris has found a home in academe, providing research opportunities and thesis topics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teams can be found associated with many prominent institutions of higher education, among them Marlboro College, University of Indiana at Bloomington, UCal Berkeley, and even such conservative institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, and M.I.T. Like most modern teams, they are a revival side; that is; a team formed in a town that does not have a tradition of Morris Dancing. THE KING'S MORRIS are a Cotswold Men's team who perform jigs and dances mainly from the Bledington, Fieldtown, Bampton, Badby, Bucknell and Adderbury 'traditions'. The team performs in public from May until September, usually on Friday or Saturday evenings. Displays are normally given outside pubs in North West Norfolk, the evening often finishing with folk music in the bar. On Bank Holidays the team normally presents dancing tours, travelling further afield in Norfolk and performing during the day. Displays are often given at fetes, galas and other less well defined places and sometimes the team travels to various parts of England to dance with other teams.
