The 'Butterflies' have danced in the Midlands region of the UK and our repertoire includes traditional dances from the north west and dances in the north west style named after local Redditch areas. These days most people in the United Kingdom have either seen Cotswold Morris dance, or know about it. However, it is a serious presumption to expect that everyone in the world knows what a pub is, never mind how Cotswold Morris dancing works. Some things here may be obvious to you and me but not to the majority of non-English people, in other words, most of the world. Please therefore bear with me when I say something obvious, or say something slightly inaccurate for the sake of simplicity. The Cotswold Style of Morris Cotswold Morris is not restricted to the geographical region of The Cotswolds. It is danced all over the country, and all over the world too. If you had to sum up the Cotswold style in a few phrases you would have to say that it was typified by a light, jumping style, and the use of bells, sticks and hand-kerchiefs (or wavers as they are sometimes known). The expression 'light, jumping style' is a relative term, other styles of Morris involve a heavier 'stamping rhythm' type of dance coupled with shouts, more akin to the African tribal dancing. It is relative because not all Cotswold Morris sides perform strictly 'light' jumping. Some dances for example involve heavy footwork and, especially with a double or triple team (12 or 18 dancers) the expression 'light' does not come to mind. For example, on one memorable occasion Eynsham Morris, who dance the Cotswold Style, broke the stage at the Chippenham Folk Festival dancing a double set of

Harry Kitchener at the Anne Port Bay Folk Club formed the Helier Morris Men, in 1975 and we first danced out in that same year. We took part in the Battle of Flowers which is a well know event here in the Channel Islands ("the Battle" as its known locally), dancing at intervals up and down the parade. In 1976 we had our first Ale (for those of you who know little about Morris, an ale is where we get together and dance with other Morris sides, sing songs and generally enjoy ourselves). We invited the Wessex Morris Men, who feature a lot in ours and in a lot of side's history. At Christmas we performed our first Mummers Play (again for those of you that know little about Morris, a Mummers play is just that, a short act usually based around the concept of death and resurrection). 1980 saw us no longer able to practice at Howard Davis Farm, as the barn we used during the winter months was converted into Science labs.

It is in widespread use for the transmission of folk music via ASCII text, and there are numerous programs which convert the abc source code into beautifully typeset score and/or audio outputs. One of these abc client programs is abc2ps by Michael Methfessel abc language (w:) which permits alignment of lyrics with notes. This extension can be applied to the problem of communicating the notations of folk dancing; i.e., stepping and hand motions. In particular, it is demonstrably applicable to morris dancing. Historically morris dance notation has been done by typesetting (or handwriting) abbreviations of foot stepping and hand motions under and over the musical score. This was the methodology originally employed by Cecil Sharp in the Morris Book, and it has been continued in one form or another in almost all subsequent publications for teaching the morris. In June of 1997 Norman Stanfield of the Morris Dancing Discussion List started a thread on the problem of jigs with slow capers. The existing notation for the musical transitions into and out of slow caper sections has rarely been precise enough to communicate exactly how a tune might be played. In many cases the exact nature of the pattern of stepping is equally ambiguous. Thus there is variation in the interpretation of the dances.
