Milos Vacek - Czech Contemporary Composer (1928 ), Horni Roven, czech republic. Biography and selected works, from the czech Music Information Project. http://www.musica.cz/comp/vacek.htm
Extractions: contact back Milos Vacek was born on 20 June 1928 at Horni Roven near Pardubice, but spent his childhood in Kamenice nad Lipou in South East Bohemia where he gained foundations of musical education from his father Jindrich Vacek, a composer and teacher. He studied at the organ department of Prague Conservatory (1943-47) and completed the studies of composition at the Academy of Arts and Music in Prague with Frantisek Picha and Jaroslav Ridky (1947-51 ). Of importance for his future development as composer was his activity in the Vit Nejedly Army Artistic Ensemble (1951-54), where in practical artistic activity he was developing his sense of immediate effect, impartation and dramatic character of music, which later became a characteristic component of his talent. Since 1954 Vacek has dedicated himself to composition professionally. He also holds various organisational positions in the field of music, above all in the Union of Czech Composers and Concert Artists. Vacek s tendency towards musical dramatic creation was expressed already in his first opera with a historical subject from the period of Hussite wars, "Jan Zelivsky", composed at the age of twenty-five. Then his dramatic talent developed broadly in ballet, incidental, film music and in musical comedy. The latter became his first big domaine where Vacek was gaining successes since the end of the fifties; his ballets are introduced at prominent Prague stages, in other Czechoslovak towns and meet with great response abroad (in particular France, Italy, the GDR, the FRG, Austria, Spain, Mexico).
Extractions: Jews are believed to have lived in Bohemia and Moravia the historic territories that constitute the Czech Republic since the tenth century. Significant Jewish communities had developed in Prague and Brno by the 13 th century, and these became active and enduring centers of Jewish life and learning. After centuries of restrictions on Jewish settlement and activity, Jews in this region entered an era of relative liberation under the rule of Hapsburg Monarch Joseph II. They eventually gained emancipation in 1867, under Austro-Hungarian rule. Many Jews in this region subsequently began to embrace Reform Judaism, uprooting the strict Orthodoxy that was, until then, the norm. JDC Begins Working in the Czech Republic In March 1919, the JDC relief committee was organized in Prague. In the 1930s, JDC helped establish loan kassas (loan cooperatives), non-sectarian groups, and a womens committee, and it furnished assistance to German refugees. JDC also helped provide medical care, childcare, vocational training, and education in this region. The Holocaust The 1938 Munich Pact forced Czechoslovakia to cede its frontier to Germany, and Kristallnacht brought havoc and terror to the Jewish community in November of that year. In March 1939, Slovakia declared itself an independent state. The Nazis responded by occupying the rest of Czechoslovakia and declaring the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. A massive Jewish emigration began in response to these events, but came to an abrupt halt in 1941. Of the 90,000 Jews in Bohemia and Moravia before the start of the war, only 10,000 survived. Most of Czech Jewry was murdered in the Terezin ghetto or in Auschwitz.

EMS Mathematical Weekend - Prague 2nd Joint EMS mathematical weekend, in conjunction with the czech Mathematical Society. Charles University, Prague, czech republic; 35 September 2004. http://mvs.jcmf.cz/emsweekend/
Extractions: Europe has a long tradition in Mathematics. The development of Mathematics in Europe was almost always on a national, or even regional, basis. One should therefore speak of "traditions" rather than a single "tradition" in Mathematics in Europe. This was of course a reflection of the political disputes and cultural differences among the many european nationalities. However, the last two decades have witnessed major changes in these state of affairs: many of the political conflicts have disapeared and the information revolution has broken national barriers. Meanwhile, a European sense of identity is slowly growing. The European Mathematical Society (EMS) has helped bringing these changes to the European mathematical community through its various activities, including the organization of meetings and workshops, such as the European Congress of Mathematics and the EMS Summer Schools. We follow the scenario suggested by EMS on series of smaller, more frequent, meetings in specific areas of mathematics: the EMS Mathematical Weekends. They offer a chance for European and other mathematicians working in related areas to get together and interact on a more permanent basis. This is the second meeting in a newly established series, following the
