Extractions: Making Your Computers Millennium Ready October 99/November 99, Journal of Adventist Education , written by Janine Lim What will happen when the year 2000 rolls around? Some experts think the situation is not that series. "Chances are, few school districts will experience a computer meltdown this severe when classes resume on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000." Others predict doomsday scenarios such as the following for K-12 schools: "Administrative computer systems scramble student records. Heating and ventilation systems shut down. District-wide computer networks grind to a halt. Security doors won't open. Voice mail systems fall silent. Payroll and accounting systems print nonsense numbers and the staff doesn't get paid." Some computer programmers have become survivalists and are stockpiling food and other supplies. Marketers are taking advantage of the millennium madness and selling survival kits, generators, blankets, oil-burning lanterns, and more. How did this problem start? "When the first computer programmers went to work in the 1950s and '60s, they took a shortcut. Instead of entering all four numbers in a year, such as 1999, they used only the last two digits: 99. That way they could save valuable space in the computer's memory. Besides, in the 1950s, the year 2000 seemed a long way off! Computer experts figured that all the programs would be different by now. They were wrong. Many of the original computer programs from the 1950s and '60s are, in fact, still in use today. In addition, many newer programs simply followed the two-digit model for tracking years."

CURRENT EVENTS UPDATE - FALL 1999 Bemer himself wrote the earliest published y2k warningsfirst in 1971, then againin 1979. Meanwhile, the torch of y2k awareness passed to a new generation. http://www.time.com/time/teach/glenfall99/p11.html
Extractions: No one in the computer industry wanted to rock the boat. And no one could alter the course IBM had set, not even the International Standards Organization, which adopted the four-digit date standard in the 1970s. The Pentagon promised to adopt century-friendly dates around 1974, then sat on its hands. Bemer himself wrote the earliest published Y2K warningsfirst in 1971, then again in 1979. Greeted by nothing but derision, he retired in 1982. "How do you think I feel about this thing?" says Bemer, now an officer at his own Y2K software firm. "I made it possible to do four digits, and they screwed it up." By 1999 folly has compounded folly. In many cases, the original cobol code has been rejiggered so many times that the date locations have been lost. And even when programmers find their quarry, they aren't sure which fixes will work. The amount of code that needs to be checked has grown to a staggering 1.2 trillion lines. Estimates for the cost of the fix in the U.S. alone range from $50 billion to $600 billion. As for Y2K compliance in Asian economies still struggling with recession? Forget about it.
