Extractions: Nationally Via Satellite T.V. For Immediate Release Jan 17, 2002 COLLEGE PARK, Md. Two award-winning University of Maryland's television programs have made their national debut on ResearchChannel. UMTV's Between the Lines: American Journalism Review premiers today on ResearchChannel's channel 9400 on the DISH Network , a national satellite television distributor. ResearchChannel will also begin webcasting the show soon on its Internet site. The Global Village, hosted by Leonard Elmore, premiered nationally in late December and can be seen on both the ResearchChannel on the DISH Network and via webcasting on the ResearchChannel site. Both shows are produced at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism's UMTV studios in the Richard Eaton Broadcast Center. Based at the University of Washington in Seattle, ResearchChannel is a consortium of research universities and organizations that share academic and intellectual television programming. Hosted by AJR Editor Rem Rieder and Merrill College Dean Tom Kunkel, Between the Lines takes the pages of the national media magazine to in front of the camera for lively discussion of the issues facing journalists and the journalism field. Between the Lines programs include discussions of plagiarism and fabrication in the media, gender and management style in the newsroom, the Internet and the press, and coverage of President Bush. The Global Village is a political talk show providing a unique perspective in its analysis of the day's headlines. Elmore, a University of Maryland alumnus, attorney and former NBA player, is joined on the show by Maryland professors and researchers who discuss local, national, and international issues. Guests provide perspectives and background information that come from years of research and not just political alliance or personal opinion. They present an educated look at current events, helping to unravel mainstream media coverage, which can often be incomplete and confusing.

Extractions: l From the News column in the March 1999 Perspectives In 1996 a group of professional historians met to organize the History News Service (HNS), an informal syndicate of historians seeking to improve the public's understanding of current events by setting those events in their historical contexts. Since then the HNS has provided important op-ed and other articles to the press and improved links between news outlets and the historical profession. "Talking History" is a spin-off of the HNS. It was organized at about the same time with similar goals. "Talking History" is a 30-minute, weekly radio show now available by satellite through the Public Radio Satellite System. Its purpose is also to improve the public's understanding of current events by providing historical context, but it is also concerned with providing the public with a better understanding of history itself. "Talking History" was begun by historians Bryan Le Beau of Creighton University and Gerald Zahavi of the State University of New York at Albany. The show now originates out of KIOS-FM in Omaha, Nebraska, with programming provided both by Creighton and SUNY Albany. It is available by satellite to public radio system affiliates throughout the country. "Talking History" consists of several segments, including "This Week in History," "History in the News," "Historic Site of the Week," and "Coming Attractions." The two principal segments are a 15-minute interview with a professional historian on a subject of interest to a general, public audience and an op-ed provided by a historian with an eye toward providing historical context on an event in the news. "Talking History" often uses op-eds provided by the HNS.

Extractions: current or new account Before talking to children about war, parents should take time to think about the issue themselves and consider what it means to their family. Each family is unique, with its own special history and past experiences about loss, trauma and war. Let children know in language they can understand that the decision to go to war was a difficult and very serious one that took a lot of time to decide. Explain that war is intended to keep them safe, to prevent bad things from happening in the future. Because what we know about the war changes every day, children may have questions on more than one occasion. Issues may need to be discussed more than one time. New events may need clarification for children. Parents should remain flexible and open to new questions and clarifications.

Current Events As happened last summer we have secured leading nationally known teachers and practitionersof Registrations are being accepted for our Summer Youth events! http://www.fpcasheville.org/Current Events.htm
Extractions: From the Staff Child and Youth Protection Policy Adopted a word from Michael At its recent May meeting the Session approved a Child and Youth Protection Policy recommended by the Christian Education Committee. For the past year a CE task force has been working on a policy to 1) ensure the safety of children and youth who participate in our programs, and 2) help educate and sensitize our staff and volunteers who work directly and regularly with children and youth, with the goal of minimizing the possibility of false allegations of abuse. After much input and revision from the CE Committee, the policy was brought to the Session at its April meeting for review, and after discussion and revision it was unanimously approved last week. Sadly, we live in a world where child abuse is a reality, and the church no longer can remain in denial and think It could never happen here. Through intentional screening and training of our volunteers and staff, the policy will hopefully provide us a proactive plan to minimize the risk of abuse. Please contact me if you would like to see a copy of the policy. Staffed by Nancy McNeill and myself, the Task Force spent many, many hours thinking through policies and procedures that were in the best interest of protecting our children and our faith development leaders. Members of the task force represented a broad spectrum of parents and faith development volunteers, some with professional expertise in the area of child protection. Special thanks to Task Force members: Sue Sparboe Derry, Kristy Garrison, Susie Jameson, Jil Meadows, and
