(CNN) Some have called them the "9/11 generation," U.S. students who must confront and try to understand a rapidly changing world. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Indonesia to Liberia, current events have taken on special importance for young Americans living in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks. But as much as most teachers and many students want to discuss what's making headlines, they say there's less and less time in the school day to do so. Mounting pressure to meet state- and nationally mandated curriculum requirements and assessment tests means current events rarely get discussed thoroughly, according to many U.S. educators. Stephen Johnson, a U.S. history teacher at Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas, said he does not have much time to rehash the day's news with his 11th-grade history students.

Extractions: By Nancy Gibbs "The capture of this man was crucial to the rise of a free Iraq," President George W. Bush said in a nationally broadcast address from the Cabinet Room. "It marks the end of the road for him and for all who bullied and killed in his name." It was a team of 600 soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division and U.S. special forces that acted on the tip that Saddam was hiding in a little town called Dawr, 15 miles from his hometown of Tikrit. These soldiers had been scouring the area for months in the belief that he would stay close to home, where loyalty among those who most benefited from his rule still ran deep. U.S. intelligence sources tell TIME that over the past month they were getting better leads. President Bush first got word from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on the afternoon of Dec. 13, in a call to Camp David. "We think we may have him," Rumsfeld announced. Bush called Adnan Pachachi, the acting president of the Iraqi governing council, to congratulate him; as they were trying to get him on the cell phone Pachachi was with U.S. Ambassador L. Paul Bremer at Saddam's holding location.

Call Senator Grassley's office and tell him it is essential to include MiCASSA (S. 971) and Money Follows the Person (S. 1394) in the upcoming April Senate hearing on long-term-care issues. Senator Charles E Grassley (R-Iowa) Washington, DC 20510 Below is some background information about MiCASSA and Money Follows the Person: Yesterday Senator Grassley finally announced the long awaited hearing on the institutional bias in long term care! But deeply disturbing is the fact that the Senator refused to commit to including MiCASSA (S 971) and/or Money Follows the Person (S 1394) in the agenda for the hearing. Senator Grassley has, for over seven months (since before September of last year), allegedly been working on an alternate bill to S. 1394 (Money Follows the Person) for the Bush Administration. However, although the Administration professes great enthusiasm and support for the bill and has been promising that this bill was "just about" to be introduced since September, nothing has been forthcoming. Meanwhile Senator Grassley has not signed on to either MiCASSA (S. 971) or Money Follows the Person (S. 1294).

June 21, 2001: Rachel gives us this Andrea McArdle update: "Andrea just opened the tour of Cabaret in Tokyo, Japan. She is there with her mother and Alexis. The audiences there are very respectful, but very different from American crowds. For example, they only clap after Andrea sings the title song and during the curtain call, not at the end of each song like we do in the States. Andrea will not be coming to Broadway in Cabaret right away. Gina Gershon just finished her run and former Miss America Kate Shindle will be filling in until July 2nd, when Brooke Shields starts. Kate was Sally right before Andrea, so it is easier for her to come in for the two weeks than to teach someone else the part. Rumor is that Brooke will play Sally until Natasha Richardson comes back to reprise the role and then the show will close. If not, maybe Andrea will get her chance. No word of any permanent plans for when she gets back; perhaps some rest is in order, as she has been working since March 1999 with no break."
