Extractions: Although there are very few spelling rules that will provide students with concrete spelling direction, learning spelling rules which apply 80% of the time is a valid activity that students should experience. By choosing a current event or content specific question each day/week, and a spelling rule that students need to work on, the teacher will motivate students to pay attention to both. Students will use an inductive reasoning strategy to learn/review a spelling rule and to earn extra credit points. From students' writing, the teacher diagnoses the kinds of spelling errors that students are making. The teacher then identifies one specific kind of spelling error that students are making and the spelling rule which addresses this type of error (see Spelling Rules sheet). For example, a common spelling error for students in grades 6-8 is forgetting to keep the l when adding -ly to a word ending in l. Therefore, the following rule would need to be taught/reviewed: Keep both l's when adding -ly to a word ending in l. The following words are examples of this rule:
