Extractions: November 2003 Friends, I recently returned from a three-week expedition in Nepal. As some of you already know, the Mera Peak climb was marred by some unfortunate events, including the tragic death of Sherpa Andre at Mera La Camp. Andre and I, both afflicted with high-altitude related maladies, were racing down to lower altitude along with three other expedition members when his heart failed at the 5000m camp. Despite vigorous efforts to resuscitate him, Andre died of high altitude pulmonary edema on November 6. He was buried in a makeshift grave and later carried down by four sherpas and given a funeral on November 16. A significant amount of condolence money was given to Andres family and more is expected in the near future. It was an extremely difficult trip, to say the least, but I am thankful that once again I was accompanied by some wonderful people, both fellow climbers and trip organizers. I am now fully recovered and training hard in preparation for upcoming back-to-back trips to Vinson, Antarctica (Jan) and Aconcagua, Argentina (Feb). For those interested, there is an article about Kens Climbing For Kids in this weeks edition of Metropolis Magazine. You can also access the article using the following link:

Extractions: Experts say parents need to have good communication with their children and set specific boundaries, such as imposing curfews and avoiding strangers. Suggestions to protect children: Tell your children which homes they can visit when you're not there. Discuss the boundaries of where they can and can't go in the neighborhood. Make sure children know their names, addresses and telephone numbers and know how to use the telephone. Caution children not to open the door or talk to anyone who comes to the door when they are home alone. Don't drop your children off alone at malls, movies, video arcades or parks. Tell children never to approach a vehicle, occupied or not, unless accompanied by a parent or trusted adult. Impose a curfew, make sure your children know it and require them to check in with you if they are going to be late.
Extractions: How do I explain that the US is at war with Iraq? For all kids: First, find out what the children saw, read, or heard, and then encourage them to ask questions. It's best to be honest about what is known at a given point in time. Tell the truth, using appropriate language, and answer the questions directly without giving more information than the child is asking for. Provide an answer that includes something like "What we know so far is that the leader in Iraq is able to harm people in our country and in other countries. Our President and his representatives have consulted with the United Nations to take steps to prevent us from being hurt and to solve our disagreements peacefully. The goal was to prevent anyone from being hurt but no agreement was reached." Back to top.
