Extractions: sun.com How To Buy My Sun Worldwide Sites ... Euro Currency and Solaris The Euro in Information Technology Standards Euro Currency Implementation Resources The introduction of the euro as the single European currency profoundly impacts the way enterprises operate. The transition to the euro also has a number of practical consequences for the day-to-day operations of enterprises, such as preparing information systems for the use of the euro. To fulfill this need, careful planning is essential. However, recent surveys have shown that few enterprises, except perhaps for large banks and insurance companies, are actually prepared. The impact of the euro is far-ranging, and not limited solely to European companies. Anyone conducting a financial transaction with a European customer or supplier will find it necessary to modify their information systems to support the euro. And many of these companies may be located in regions outside Europe, for in today's global economy, the distinction of geographical location has become increasingly blurred. Examples of systems that are affected by the introduction of the euro include: Accounting software (general ledger) Electronic payment and trading systems Invoicing and billing systems Payroll systems Accounts receivable and accounts payable subledgers Inventory systems that record the value of the inventory Fixed asset systems that monitor value and depreciation charges of assets

Extractions: The European Union (EU) was developed as an institutional framework for the construction of a united Europe. The EU consists of 15 member countries; Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. All of these countries share the Euro as a common currency, except for Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom. They are known as the European Monetary Union (EMU). Aside from a common currency, these countries also share a single monetary policy dictated by the European Central Bank or (ECB). The EMU is the world's second largest economic power, with GDP valued at over $6 trillion USD in 2002. With a highly developed fixed income, equity and futures market, the EMU has the second most attractive investment market for domestic and international investors. The EMU is primarily a service-oriented economy. Services in 2001 accounted for approximately 70 percent of GDP while manufacturing, mining and utilities only account for 22 percent of GDP. The EMU is a trade- and capital-flow driven economy. Unlike most major economies, the EMU does not have a large trade deficit or surplus. In fact, the EMU went from a small trade deficit in 2001 to a small trade surplus in 2002. EU exports comprise approximately 19 percent of world trade while EU imports account for only 17 percent of total world imports. Because of the size of the EMU's trade with the rest of the world it has significant power in the international trade arena. International clout is one of the primary goals when the EU was formed allowing the individual countries to group as one entity as well as negotiating a more equal playing field with the U.S., its largest trading partner.

The official paper currency is the U.S. dollar, which is accepted everywhere at the rate of B1 = US$1. If you have U.S. dollars or U.S. dollar-denomination traveler's checks, then there is no need to exchange currency. Unlike most other parts of Central and South America, it is relatively easy to exchange other major currencies also, due to the extensive offshore banking business in Panama. Traveler's checks and currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange shops, and hotels, as well as international airports. Larger banks may offer the best exchange rates, but avoid black marketers at all cost. Consult your bank about current exchange rates before departure. Keep all receipts for reconversion.
