It is a white flag with a blue device with an inscription 'SPOMENIK KULTURE' underneath in two rows. The symbol is the UNESCO symbol of protected monuments of culture. The flag was hoisted from all the buildings that were protected by UNESCO as a cultural and natural wealth of mankind, though it didn't help much. Many of the buildings hanging the flag were totaly destroyed, but that is another story.

The average temperature in Opatija is some degrees higher then in neighbouring places, that is the reason why camellias, magnolias, palms, bamboos, and other subtropical plants can grow in its parks. The central Opatija park for example is a horticultural monument covering an area of 3.64 hectares. About 159 plant species grow here. A great number of them originates from distant parts of the world and is not typical of this region. In this park you can find the Japanese camelia (Camellia japonica), which in time has become the distinctive symbol of Opatija. Hidden in this luxuriant evergreen vegetation there are many historical and recessional buildings. In numerous restaurants along the Riviera you can taste the European national dishes as well as Oriental dishes. Beside cafes and coffeehouses there are many facilities for young people as well, like dancing terraces, nightclubs. The Casino, several concerts, operas, folk shows, theatre performances and exhibitions are an interesting entertainment for all generations. But also if you like sports you will have a lot of fun staying in Opatija. You can choose between tennis, sailing, swimming, horse riding, or even skiing at wintertime in the nearby mountains. There are several attractions you should visit in the surrounding area of Opatija, like the picturesque Volosko, the traditional fishing villages Icici and Ika. The old town of Lovran is also worth a look, as well as the long sandy beaches of Medveja. You also have the possibility to make a boat excursion to Venice.

The first library catalogue dates back to 1610. On September 23rd 1669, the Roman emperor and Hungaro-Croatian king Leopold I issued the university status diploma and privileges to the Jesuit Academy situated in a free royal town of Zagreb. At that time the library collection comprised 5,179 books. Medieval library was stocked almost entirely by donations. In 1777 Baltazar Adam Krcelic, (1715-1778) historian and a canon donated his private library which is considered even today, the biggest donation in the history of the library.
