Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, degenerative, invariably fatal brain disorder. It affects about one person in every one million people per year worldwide; in the United States there are about 200 cases per year. CJD usually appears in later life and runs a rapid course. Typically, onset of symptoms occurs about age 60, and about 90 percent of patients die within 1 year. In the early stages of disease, patients may have failing memory, behavioral changes, lack of coordination and visual disturbances. As the illness progresses, mental deterioration becomes pronounced and involuntary movements, blindness, weakness of extremities, and coma may occur. There are three major categories of CJD:

Extractions: but because I have had eeg tests in the earlier part of the year which were normal my doctors are reluctant to suggest any form of illness though they still cannot explain the physical symptoms. I have also become a very passive character over the last few months and it is fair to say that I am worried about the possibility it may be CJD as I know myself that I am not right even though to the outside observer I look perfectly normal. The most worrying thing though is the fact that everytime I am standing my head feels like I am going to fall over even though my body stays upright, I can only liken this sensation to one which you would have for example if you have never smoked before and you inhale massively on a cigarette, the sensation in the head is similar but permanent, my apologies for using the analogy but I am speaking from my younger days when I experimented with smoking! I am 22yrs old now and have lost my girlfriend, my place at university and seven months of my life due to feeling this way. If anyone has any information which would help me or any experience of a similar condition

Extractions: Margaret Mead Welcome to the Blood Recall/Withdrawal - Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) website. This website is the home of the Blood-CJD support/discussion group. It was created to fill the needs of people who have received notices that the blood products that they, or their children, received, or that were used in the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cultures that produced their children, were recalled/withdrawn from the market because a member of the donor pool was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) or was at risk for the disease. CJD is an infectious rapidly progressive fatal brain-deteriorating disease. It is a member of the class of diseases called Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs). Another TSE is Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (i.e. Mad Cow Disease). Note: We try to present different views on issues when possible. Therefore, the views represented by the authors of the linked web pages do not necessarily represent the views of Blood Recall/Withdrawal - Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).
