Extractions: Creating and Maintaining Tables Today you learn about creating databases. Day 9 covers the CREATE DATABASE CREATE TABLE ALTER TABLE DROP TABLE , and DROP DATABASE statements, which are collectively known as data definition statements. (In contrast, the SELECT UPDATE INSERT , and DELETE statements are often described as data manipulation statements.) By the end of the day, you will understand and be able to do the following: You now know much of the SQL vocabulary and have examined the SQL query in some detail, beginning with its basic syntax. On Day 2, "Introduction to the Query: The SELECT Statement," you learned how to select data from the database. On Day 8, "Manipulating Data," you learned how to insert, update, and delete data from the database. Now, nine days into the learning process, you probably have been wondering just where these databases come from. For simplicity's sake, we have been ignoring the process of creating databases and tables. We have assumed that these data objects existed currently on your system. Today you finally create these objects. The syntax of the CREATE statements can range from the extremely simple to the complex, depending on the options your database management system (DBMS) supports and how detailed you want to be when building a database.
Extractions: Creating Views and Indexes Today we begin to cover topics that may be new even to programmers or database users who have already had some exposure to SQL. Days 1 through 8 covered nearly all the introductory material you need to get started using SQL and relational databases. Day 9, "Creating and Manipulating Tables," was devoted to a discussion of database design, table creation, and other data manipulation commands. The common feature of the objects discussed so fardatabases, tables, records, and fieldsis that they are all physical objects located on a hard disk. Today the focus shifts to two features of SQL that enable you to view or present data in a different format than it appears on the disk. These two features are the view and the index. By the end of today, you will know the following: A view is often referred to as a virtual table. Views are created by using the

Extractions: One of the exciting prospects of using the VBA environment is that one can access the MS Office dictionary, thesaurus and grammar checker while also having access to the user's document (e.g., student essay or prepared text). In addition it is possible to create ones own dictionaries and grammar checkers. Here we give our impressions of how the proofing tools can be used in creating educational activities. Traditionally teachers of writing have suggested turning off the MS Word proofing tools as there seems to be no reliable way of using such general purpose tools. The proofing tools are built for speed, not quality, requiring a critical eye to interpret their suggestions correctly. Our goal was to see if we could create more focused activities that would teach students about the limitations and usage of the proofing tools and also to create activities around some of the more interesting functionality that is provided. Dic-Quiz.zip is a rough prototype of some of the quizzes described below (MS Word v8 document compressed as a ZIP file). This is primarily an illustration of the information that can be extracted from the dictionary and thesaurus. In the sections below we discuss how this could be used. For more information look at the VBA online help that includes many examples of accessing the proofing tools. There are also some interesting insights into the Office '97 proofing tools in

These components cover the basic Windows controls as well as provide some specialty components not inherent in Windows itself. Still, you might need to create a component of your own to perform a task not provided by the pre-installed components. Writing a component requires these steps: Today you learn how to create components. As with most of the more difficult concepts in Delphi, it's not so bad after you've done it once or twice. You will learn this technique by building a component called TFlashingLabel. TFlashingLabel is a regular Label component that flashes its text. By the time the day is done, you will know what you need in order to create basic components. Writing components requires a higher level of programming expertise than you have used up to this point. First, you have to create a class for your new component. The class needs to be designed so that some of its properties show up in the Object Inspector, whereas others will be used only at runtime. In addition, you will almost certainly have to write methods for your component. Some will be private to the component; others will be made public so that users of the component can access them. Finally, you might have to write events for the component. Obviously, there is some work involved. As great as Delphi's visual programming environment is, it won't help you here. Writing components is pure programming.
