Extractions: Grade Level: Multi-Age with First Grade and High School Content Area: Social Studies, American History, Spanish, Language Arts, Art, Technology Topic: The study of Hispanic countries and the experience of immigration to the United States Focus: How can learning about other countries and cultures help us become more understanding and accepting of other cultures and peoples? How can understanding the immigration experience help us understand our own heritage and family history better? Timeline: Depending on depth of discussions and time allowed for research and activities, from two to three weeks. Students will work in cooperative groups to do online research on various Spanish speaking countries. Each group will be responsible for a different country. All groups will work together to compile a timeline of major historical events in the countries, including major American historical events as point of reference. ASSESSMENT FOR RESEARCH COMPONENT With the information collected from research, students will write an individual two and a half to four -page research report in Spanish. In addition to the required elements included in the rubric, students need to include a section on comparing and contrasting two elements of culture in the United States and the Hispanic country, for example, gender roles, dating, education, food, or family. RUBRIC FOR WRITTEN REPORT Students will prepare a group oral presentation with information taken from the written paper in order to report findings to the rest of the class, and to practice speaking in Spanish. The presentation must include multimedia with audio and video, and a visual aid (poster) with pictures and artwork, mounted on posterboard or construction paper. Requirements are listed in the rubric below.
