Registered: May 2000 posted 02-03-2004 10:49 AM I was doing some searches on homework help suggestions made on our forum, and I quickly realized there's an incredible amount of information shared, but it's not always easy to find. So, I tried to categorize some of the best threads, and gather up any homework resource threads that have been shared. I'm sure I've missed some great ones! As I find more, I'll add to this thread, and I hope others will feel free to do the same! Weve had several wonderful threads about managing homework time, dealing with particularly difficult behaviors about homework, and working with schools to be sure that homework is appropriate in terms of repetitiveness and overall quantity/time required. One guideline is that homework should consist of about 10 minutes per day per grade. So, a kindergartener should have 10 minutes of homework, a 3rd grader should have about 40 minutes of homework, etc. Special projects usually are over and above these guidelines, but since they have long lead-times they offer kids the opportunity to learn time management and project management (and parents to teach these skills or at least reinforce them if the teacher is working on these concepts as well).

Extractions: The Faculty Program of Studies Letter from the Department Chair Welcome to the Social Studies web site. The Mission Statement of our department is "to prepare young people to become lifelong learners and to develop their ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society." Our teachers are committed to enhancing the learning environment of our students through a variety of teaching methods including group projects, Socratic seminars, group discussions and lectures to name a few. Reading and multiple writing projects are a core foundation of our curriculum. Term papers are mandatory for all sophomores and junior classes of European and United States history respectively. It is part of our goal to help students better understand the world we live in through critical thinking and analysis of historical events that have shaped the current political, social, economic and cultural landscape of today. Daily discussions on current political events help bridge the gap between events of the past and the world we live in today. Our core courses in World Cultures, Modern European history, and United States history prepare our students to continue their academic careers at the finest colleges and universities in the country. Their success is our ultimate goal. The Faculty Department Chair: Mr. Marra

Extractions: Tip #1: Provide well-lit work area, equipped with needed supplies You can support your child's efforts to complete his homework by providing him with the right workspace at home. A good work area is one that has adequate space, is well lit, has the needed supplies (see list to right) and is relatively free from distractions. Tip #2: Control and limit meaningful distractions Some children and adolescents frequently choose to do their homework while listening to a radio or watching TV, claiming that it helps them focus. In many situations, this may be true. However, certain types of noise in certain situations may be distracting. Audio and visual distractions will tend to interfere more with difficult assignments than with easy and routine assignments. In addition, meaningful background sounds, such as TV, speech, and vocal music, tend to be more distracting than instrumental music or other nonvocal background noise. As a general rule, you should try and control and limit meaningful distractions, such as telephone, TV, vocal music, and interruptions from others during homework time, particularly during difficult assignments. Do not worry as much about nonvocal background noise during easy and routine assignments, if your child is completing her work. Tip # 3: Help your child develop a daily and weekly schedule of homework and other activities

Extractions: British world traveler Isabella Bird Bishop circled the globe three times during her extensive travels, beginning in 1872. In 1892 she became the first woman elected to the Royal Geographic Society. This European map of the world from 1649 shows a major misconception Europeans held about world geography. The map includes Terra Australis, a vast southern continent connected to the southern tip of South America and occupying most of the South Pacific Ocean. European theorists believed that a huge body of land had to exist in the southern hemisphere in order to balance the large continents found in the northern hemisphere. Expeditions in the 18th century, notably those of English explorer Captain James Cook, would prove that Terra Australis does not exist. William Blaeu/PNI Geography The science of place, i.e., the study of the surface of the earth, the location and distribution of its physical and cultural features, the aerial patterns or places that they form, and the interrelation of these features as they affect humans.

Extractions: Since this is a reference course, I need to know what you did and WHY as well as your findings. Your responses to the questions that follow may be somewhat informal, but it is important to clearly discuss your strategy. You must also comment on the utility and quality of any resource that you use. Evidence of critical thought is important. I may ask you to begin by looking at a recognized source to answer a particular question. However , use other sources as well. I may have missed a newer, better source. It impossible to keep up with all the new social science (SS) sources in hard copy and digital formats. For hard copy materials, the best approach is to know class numbers and look for newer material when you are at the reference shelves in your research library. If you have difficulty with a particular problem, you may ask a reference librarian for help in identifying appropriate resources. I make a reasonable effort to change the exercises from year to year. In some situations, where the resources are standard and have not changed or where I have run out of steam, questions may be repeated from the previous year. Please do not borrow responses from others who took the course earlier or other students. I value your responses and your insights. To be an effective information professional, you need to have the personal experience of working with these materials.
