    Extractions: WELCOME TO ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND! When you enter the gates of the Renaissance Faire, the world of 16th century England awaits. It is the "Golden Age," the English Renaissance, the time of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth Tudor, who reigned from 1558 to 1603. To escape the heat and stench of London in the summer, the Queen would often travel to the countryside and visit various towns and the estates of her nobility. Most of her court would travel with her, many of those in her government, and others looking for favor from the Queen. Add a full complement of servants for each high-born traveler and the numbers would often swell into the hundreds. At each stop, the hosting noble or town official would be expected to welcome the Queen with much pomp and circumstance, producing elaborate presentations, plays, masques and the like, for the Queen's enjoyment. It is one of these "progresses" that brings Queen Elizabeth to the Renaissance Faire. We do not portray a particular year for the Queen's visit, but roughly the period from the 1560's until just before the Spanish Armada in 1588. We are "a chapter, not a page" out of Elizabethan history.

Costuming can make or break a game - as proper attire helps players get into character and can help evoke the proper mood for a game. Those mysterious cultists look a lot more threatening when they are in dark robes, rather than jeans and tee-shirts. You can create evocative costumes, even on a tight budget, and your game will benefit by it. This is my own collection of tips and suggestions, accumulated over many years of LARPing and a general love of dressing up on a small budget. This document is divided into two sections - tips for those who can sew and have access to a sewing machine and a section for those who don't. I suggest that you read the entire document, and pick and choose what suits your needs. Johanna Tips For Everyone Allow yourself plenty of time to assemble your costume. I like to have at least two week's notice of an event, and I prefer at least a month. That gives me time to pick and choose what I want, and wait for fabric sales - which seem to happen every other weekend.

Knickers and Knickerbockers were worn by our ancestors. There have been many names for a knicker over the years. Knickers, Knickerbockers, Joppers, Plus Two, Plus Four, Plus Six, etc. In 1923 the war to end all wars was over and the Roaring 20s exploded along with the birth of complete flamboyance. These were the days of the Plus Fours, Argyle Socks, Silk Tie and Shirt, the Gatsby look, Flapper Girls, Swooping Fendered Cars, Panama Hats, Ski Knickers and the complete Plus Four Suits. The "Plus Four" remained very prominent in high fashion until the stock market crash of 1929. This time period made it too expensive and impractical to continue the argyle sock. The trend now was to a solid sock and eventually the demise of the "Plus Four" with the birth of the first walking short in about 1933.

I have one room in our home dedicated to this hobby. I would say that costuming takes a great deal of knowledge of textiles, history, math, and engineering. Yes, that's right, math and engineering. If you do not know how to plot a curve or calculate the amount of square inches you will need for a pattern you will need to learn fast. You will purchase fabric by the yard but you will have to know how to lay out your pattern on it to be able to use the maximum amount of your yardage. Sure if you buy a commercial pattern it shows you how to lay it out and how much fabric at what width to purchase. But if you are like most costumers you will graduate to making your own patterns and with that comes the knowledge of how much fabric and trims you really need to buy. It will be second nature in no time to you and it is all math! So if you were bad at math in school it was because they did not use fabric and pattern making as an example to help you learn.
