Extractions: At the end of the second millennium, when traditional art of various European ethnic groups took the road of museums or acquired new meanings in small craft workshops, Romanians are crossing the Atlantic as ambassadors of an ancient civilization of the old continent. Wearing their festive traditional costumes, they are aware and proud of their contribution to the universal human patrimony. Romania is the cradle of one of the most ancient civilizations of the classical European antiquity: the Tracian-Dacian civilization, as well as of 6,000 years of Neolithic and Bronze Age agrarian civilization that preceded it. Next to archaeology and linguistics, Romanian ethnography bears witness to such long history and feeds off of 85 centuries of agrarian civilization. One knows a country through its people and the items created by them. Together with the language, customs and traditions, folk clothing marks its ethnic identity and documents its historical and artistic values. Romanian traditional dress has existed in similar forms since the beginning of this millennium. On Roman monuments such as Trajan's Column in Rome and Tropaeum Traiani from Adamclisi, in Dobruja, the Romanians' forefathers-Dacians-wear very similar attire as their followers.

TRACHT: NATIVE DRESS, FASHION OR COSTUME? style clothing is a fashion or a costume and not designs are limited only by the designer staste and an outward symbol of national and ethnic identity, turned http://www.serve.com/shea/germusa/trachten.htm
Extractions: From: Indiana German Heritage Society Newsletter, Fall 1996, Vol. 12, Issue 4 When volunteering to work at a German-American event or an International fair, you may be told to "come in costume." Meant is usually the stereotypical Bavarian Dirndl for the gals and white shirt and Lederhosen for the guys. Dirndl dress and Lederhosen are folk-style clothes and as such are costumes; they are city folks' image of simple country life. It's something one puts on to be, for a little while, something one is not. Much to the amusement of visitors from German- speaking areas, our outfits vaguely resemble "Tracht" worn in the Alpine regions of Bavaria and Austria. Together with Oktoberfests, Germanfests, Strassenfests and wives/war brides, they were brought over by the GIs, stationed in Southern Germany. About the many and rich variations of earlier garment brought from other German-speaking regions little is known today. A "Tracht" is a traditional garment typical of a certain area. The word "Tracht" is related to the verb "tragen," "to wear." Before the leveling effect of urbanization, native dress was always bound to a given place, a specific social unit, and a local culture. This explains the great regional diversity. In his article " About Dialects and High German " (Spring 1996, Vol. 12, Issue 2) Eberhard Reichmann showed vastly different dialect and cultural areas from which German-speaking people came and still come. Each region not only has its own dialect, it also has its own set of customs and traditions, including dress.
TRADITIONAL MALE AO DAI Male costumes of the Vietnamese people tend to be in Vietnam has changed, but eachethnic group has or skirts and indigo vests with design motifs imitating http://www.relc.org.sg/myweb8/ao_dai.htm
Extractions: TRADITIONAL MALE AO DAI T he traditional outfit consist of an ao dai that fits loosely and is worn over a pair of straight black or white pants. The colors of the male attire are much darker. Common colors are dark blues and greens, and occasionally, red is used. Today, the traditional male attire is not worn often. Western influence has long been incorporated in the male attire. Traditional costumes still exist and efforts are increasingly being made to restore traditional festivals and entertainment which incorporate traditional costumes. Male costumes of the Vietnamese people tend to be very simple and modest. Men wear light-coloured shirts and dark-coloured trousers. TRADITIONAL FEMALE AO DAI T he ao dai appears to flatter every figure. Its body-hugging top flows over wide trousers that brush the floor. Slits in the gown extend well above waist height and make it comfortable and easy to move in. Although virtually the whole body is swathed in soft flowing fabric, these slits give the odd glimpse of a bare midriff, making the outfit very sensual. Over time, the traditional "ao dai" has gone through certain changes. Long gowns are now carefully tailored to fit the body of a Vietnamese woman. The two long slits along the side allow the gown to have two free floating panels in the front and at the back of the dress. The floating panels expose a long pair of white silk trousers. In recent years some foreign fashions have been introduced to Vietnam; however, the traditional "ao dai" remains preferable to women in both urban and rural settings. On formal occasions, they wear a special three layered dress called an "ao dai", a long gown with slits on either side.

Extractions: Mongolian Ger Mongolian nomads' homes, clothes, weapons , and way of life are impossible to imagine without Mongolia's unique crafts, patterns, and embroidery. A special aesthetic has developed from the common things used in the everyday life of nomads over thousands of years. The beginning of the decorative arts in Mongolia dates back to pre-Bronze Age, with cave paintings. These can be found throughout Mongolia, but the highest concentration of cave paintings are in the mountains of western Mongolia, in the provinces of Hovd and Bayan Olgii. The Bronze Age saw the development of molten metal and zooform art. An example are the "deer stones" one can find dotting the Mongolian countryside: stone slabs with simplified, stylized deer carved in relief. Fortunetelling conglomerations of animal figures and animal body parts characterized the art of the Hunnu and Bronze Age people who lived in Mongolian territory. These peoples also decorated various cloth with embroidery, developed applique, and stitched felt art. Hunnu goldsmithing technology developed rapidly, and since their time, coin design has been paid special attention by the people of this area. The Hunnu also developed pottery techniques, such as creating vases by hand or by a turning method with a lock up mechanism. The Syanbi people made fur clothes and traveling bags with perforated embroidery, and their women wore tall headgear. The Uhuani peoples' leaders were also their expert artisans: they were able to make bows and arrows, weapons, embroidery, woven items, and processed leather. During the Tureg Age, people created silver plates, golden jugs with floral motifs, and linear animal figures.

Extractions: CLOTHING and costume are an important part of identity and culture for any ethnic group. Clothing reflects the nation's way of life, customs, and philosophies. The Mongol race has its own traditional clothing which is unique from other nation's but bears similarities to a number of ethnic group's clothing in Central and Eastern Asia. The national dress of the Mongols has a rich history and is an artistic tradition that has developed over many thousands of years. Mongolian national costume is closely related with the extreme climate, livestock husbandry, customs, culture and practices of everyday life. People speaking languages from the Altaic language group (Manchus, Turkic, Mongolian, Korean and Japanese) have many cultural similarities including traditional clothing similarities. In the historical Mongolian book, "The Secret History of the Mongols," five coloured countries are described: blue Mongols (Mongolian babies are born with blue spot on their buttocks), Black Khitans, White Koreans (the white-clothed race), Yellow Sartuul (present in Uzbekistan, Tajikstan and some other Middle Eastern countries) and Red Tungad. The five countries have developed close relations in politics, culture and trading.
