Extractions: Although there are several competing definitions of ecotourism, a commonly accepted explanation is it is "purposeful travel to natural areas to understand the culture and natural history of the environment; taking care not to alter the integrity of the ecosystem; producing economic opportunities that make the conservation of natural resources beneficial to local people." (Garen, 2000, 221). Under this definition, ecotravel could range from a day-trip to a wildlife preserve to a week camping in a rainforest. (McLauren, 1998, 97). Because ecotravel can encompass such a wide variety of activities, the potential for corruption and deception in the form of the "Greenwashing" of environmentally damaging travel services, is considerable. As environmentalist Deborah McLauren describes it; at its best, ecotourism can help protect a delicate ecosystem while providing economic benefits to locals, and at its worst ecotravel can be, "environmentally destructive, economically exploitative, and culturally insensitive "greenwashed" travel." (McLauren, 1998, 98). For instance, in some brochures and websites a high-rise, high maintence hotel can appear as "eco-friendly" as a small, low-waste lodge.

I don't pretend to be an eco-tourist , so if you are looking for that angle, you won't find it here. I prefer to travel with a generous level of comfort. This means you won't find me using any of the local buses, seated amongst the chickens and vegetables - I'll be the guy in the taxi passing the local bus, taking a picture of the bus! On the other hand, I try to NOT stay in Hiltons or Holiday Inns, or use American Express travel. I have found that by using locally owned and operated hotels and tourist services, I get much more out of the trip. Why travel 10,000 miles to stay in an American-style hotel? I may as well save my money and stay in the Four Seasons in Vancouver for a few days. Club Med also doesn't appeal to me, despite considering myself a confirmed hedonist. There is something about those loud speakers announcing to the throngs that "signups for volleyball are being taken next to the bar" every five minutes that reminds me more of an army camp than a vacation spot. Don't get me wrong - they offer tremendous travel economy - it's just not for me.
