Current theory proposes that the most probable route by which humans first reached Central America was via the Bering Strait land bridge that formed with the lowering of sea level during the last of the great glacial periods, about 11,000 years ago. Undoubtedly, the earliest human inhabitants of North America came from Mongolian races that migrated along this route. Nonetheless, based on linguistic similarities, some anthropologists argue that Polynesian peoples may have sailed to the Pacific coast of South America, begun colonization of that continent, and continued their way north into this region; although, if this occurred, it was more likely within the past 3,000 years. Little or no exact evidence exists to indicate how long our species has resided in what is now Costa Rica, but it is generally agreed that the area has been inhabited for at least the past 7,000 years. Those early dwellers in this tropical land were roaming hunter-gatherers. Their movements were likely related to local elimination, or severe decline, in the larger game species populations (e.g., peccaries and deer). As the generations passed and they gained knowledge of the local plant species and their potential uses as food, fiber, building material, and medicine, the foundation for more sedentary populations was laid. There are few signs of large, organized communities with monumental stone architecture or planned ceremonial centers as are common throughout the rest of the isthmus. It is probable that there were several distinct cultures scattered all over the region. Along both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the cultures were clearly the same as those in South America. The Caribs inhabited the east coast and the Borucas y Chibchas occupied the southwest. Both semi nomadic groups hunted, fished, raised yucca, squash, and tubers, and lived in village huts. Among the mysteries left from this time period are thousands of perfectly spherical granite balls. They have been discovered in masses of different sizes in west coast burial sites, but the purpose of the balls remains unknown. In 1856, William Walker, a US military adventurer, invaded Costa Rica with his army of recently captured Nicaraguan slaves. Mora organized a small civilian army and succeeded in forcing Walker out of the country. This fight greatly unified the Costa Rican people. The following years of the 19 th century saw power struggles among the members of the coffee-growing elite and the beginning of a democratic Costa Rican Government. The new constitution, adopted in 1949, gave women the right to vote, dismantled the Costa Rican army, banned the communist party, nationalized banks, and established presidential term limits. Figueres was elected president in 1953 and Costa Rica has remained politically stable since.

The famous Mayan empire did not extend this far south in Central America. The people here were called the Chorotegas . They farmed corn, beans, fruit, and cotton. They also hunted, had large cities with religious centers, and militaries for gaining land and slaves (used for labor and ritual sacrifice). The women were the only ones allowed access to internal commerce - the market. They were also the primary artisans and writers. Then Christopher Columbus landed at what is now Puerto Limon in 1502. Soon after, Spanish explorers began arriving, and as is the theme throughout Central and South America, the onslaught of the Spanish conquistadors greatly decimated the Chorotegas' numbers through war and disease. These indigenous peoples retreated to the highlands where they could, leaving the lowlands to the Spanish and those captured for slave labor. In 1562 Juan Vasquez de Coronado arrived to take charge of the new colony as governor, establishing the capital of Cartago on the rich volcanic soils of the central area. Due to Spain's out-of-sight-out-of-mind attitude toward its colonies, Costa Rica received little assistance from the father country and so had to subsist on its own, fostering a sense of pride, egalitarianism and self-sufficiency that exists to this day. The little tropical country split with Spain in 1821, moving its capital to San Jose. The 1830's brought the reign of the coffee industry. By the 1850's coffee caught on in Europe, replacing tea as the favored drink in many countries, bringing European influences and more money into the economy than Costa Rica had ever seen.

Of interest to many relates to the sites found in the Nicoya Peninsula that show influence of both the Olmec and Nahuati civilizations.

During the various cycles of its life activity has been characterized by an alternating of an explosive, effusive phase with one of weak, explosive activity. Major events in recent history begin with the 1968 killer eruption. July 29, 1968 At 7:20 AM "Cerro" Arenalas it was called by local residentsbegan explosive activity that literally blew the west side off the volcano. Two villages at the foot of the volcano Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacónwere completely destroyed and 78 people died. Between July 29 and 31 three new craters were formed on the western flank of the volcano and a fifteen-square kilometer area (5.8 square miles) was devastated. June, 1975 During this month a period of explosive activity resulted in four strong explosions that blew large amounts of ash into the sky. The ash was carried as far away as Tilarán, 26 kilometers (16 miles) distant. There were also several burning avalanches originating in the top crater that were channeled by the valley of the Tabacón River on the northwestern flank of the volcano. June, 1984
