Copy editors are assigned particular journals that they get all the time. Every journal has at least one primary copy editor (if it's a monthly journal, as many as six copy editors may work on it) and one backup copy editor. The backup copy editor receives smaller batches of manuscript to keep his or her hand in and steps in if the primary copy editor is unavailable. 2. Does Allen Press have freelance copy editors or staff copy editors? We have about twenty freelance copy editors. Three Copyediting Coordinators are employed full-time to oversee the copyediting area and parcel out work. They prepare detailed style guidelines for each journal and evaluate and orient copyediting contractors. These three people may copyedit small jobs, rush jobs, and bids in addition to their other duties. 3. What quality control measures are in place? Contractors new to contracting for Allen Press must pass a copyediting test and undergo three orientation sessions to ensure that their work meets Allen Press's demanding requirements. New contractors are permitted to edit only very small jobs (beginning on dead copy), and all their work is read by the Copyediting Coordinators and feedback provided until the Coordinators feel that the contractor is ready to work alone.

Early registrants can help choose topics to be covered in the conference, whose aim is to help copy editors sharpen their skills and improve their status. Computer training on some of the latest newspaper editing software will be offered. Conference sessions will be in the Carolina Inn Oct. 24 and in Howell Hall, home of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Oct. 25. Members of the newly formed ACES, the American Copy Editors Society, will have conference registration reduced by the cost of their annual dues. ACES dues are $35 for professionals and $20 for students. Dues checks should be sent to ACES, P.O. Box 250239, Columbia University Station, New York, N.Y. 10025. The conference will cost $50 for ACES members and $85 for nonmembers.

But, as often as not, the profession selects for people who demonstrate their superiority by knowing rules no one else knows. My favorite copy editing stupidity: At the NYT, you are not allowed to use the verb design to describe anything that is not physical. You have to say devise . Hence this lovely sentence in my most recent column: "In subsequent research, he and Professor Mayzlin are working with a company to compare results from two types of buzz marketing: a campaign concentrated on opinion leaders selected by marketing executives and a campaign devised by the two professors to emphasize dispersion." That is not a graceful sentence. But all the copy editor cared about was getting ride of "designed." Thanks to reader George Jong for the tip.

Some of us are so bad that we can actually pay attention to the grammar warnings the word processor gives! Never try to cut corners on basic editing costs - poor proofreading and layout beats poor editing any day. People refer to edits with a mix of terminology, which I'm going to reduce to three basic categories: copy edits, hard edits, and tech edits. All manuscript editing should be done on double spaced paper, with a red pen, even if the editor will be entering those changes into a manuscript using a track changes option. Once your manuscript is finalized and your book design is completed, you send the electronic files off to an offset or print-on-demand printer. They'll either give you the option to pay a few bucks extra for a "proof" or "galley" print for final inspection, or send one for free as part of their process. TAKE THE TIME TO READ IT. I don't think I've made every mistake you can possibly make publishing books, but I'll probably get there eventually. I incurred a couple thousand dollars in "skipped inspection" costs in my self-publishing career, so the following book preparation checklist is based on experience.
