The Editor DOM Info by Terry Streeter Terry has failed to submit DOM info to me in time for the newsletter. The Editor Treasurer's Report by Greg Leitner Well another year has gone by and I have to look back on 1994 and thank all the 8-bit diehards who keep on going. It amazes me how many members don't even use their 8-bit anymore, but are willing and wanting to support it. It just goes to show how great the 8-bit Atari really is and the feeling that we just can't let it die. What ever your reasons for your continuing support is greatly appreciated by those of us who still use it. I have other systems that I can us at home, but I always go back to the 8-bit because I feel more comfortable using it knowing that it does what I ask it to do without having to pull my hair out trying to get the job done. Enough said. Our bank balance for the year ending December 31, 1994 stands at $378.34. This may seem alarming to some of you, but let me explain. The Club provides a service to its members in that Glenn purchases and sells blank disks and disk boxes along with our regular DOM's. The Club makes very little profit from these sales, but we feel it is a service that the members deserve for their membership fee. To keep costs to the members at the lowest possible price we need to buy in rather large quantities which in turn eats up our cash. But keep in mind that when you purchase these items, the money goes right back into the Club's Treasury. So we will experience a low bank balance for a short time until sales from these items replenish our account.

Extractions: Implementing our first online reference title, WORLDBOOK, is a case in point. All participants in the educational program - students, teachers, and staff - can access this electronic version of an encyclopedia 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Technology, including the Internet, provides access to the world, enabling students to learn and search in the school library, in the classroom and computer labs as well as from home. Another powerful online resource available to the school library media specialist is FIRSTSEARCH. It is an international online database of content indexed by member institutions of OCLC. This tool provides knowledge of new materials available to support the curriculum from the publishing and production agencies as well as content on the Internet web sites. It can be a very powerful tool for use in collection development of any school library program. This technology development has required that library media specialists and educators acquire new skills in computer networking, library collection development, information retrieval, and expand teaching strategies from a broad range of online systems. This development will continue to grow rapidly and impact the traditional role of the school library media specialist.

Extractions: AMM - At the Roundhouse (IAnomalous 001) The International Carnival of Experimental Sound, or ICES '72 for short, was an ambitious festival sprung from the mind of Harvey 'Job' Matusow (1926-2002). This first CD in a series documenting the festival features the complete concert given by legendary free improvising group AMM. Represented here by Eddie Prevost (percussionist extraordinaire) and Lou Gare (sax great), they offer up powerful explosions of saxophone and drums punctuated with their famous AMM silences. This particular duo version of AMM has only one other release out. This is the first time this material is available, aside from two short excerpts were published as the only 7" release on Evan Parker and Derek Bailey's Incus Records (and a very rare and desirable record that has become). EINSTRZENDE NEUBAUTEN - Perpetuum Mobile (Mute 9237) Long-awaited studio album has arrived at last. Time brings about changes and since their foundation, EN have, like no other band, reflected these major and minor, public and private vicissitudes. 'Perpetuum' expands the range of their music, enriching it with new facets: like in the radicalism with which melancholia, wafted through with farewells, is portrayed here. Or the long, almost epic narratives that rigorously take all the time they need to develop their perfect dramaturgy. Alongside these, we find subtle sonic images, whose intensity develops out of reduction or songs that breathe a fragile beauty and deeply felt mourning. But Einsturzende Neubauten also immediately continue their search for that unexpected new sound, with new installations (see 'Boreas') or the surprising instrumentation consisting of wind players, tubes, pedal steel guitars, the clavichord, bird calls, and air compressors.

The Halifax Regional School Board may be facing more cutbacks as the new mega-Board struggles with budget deficits. Joy Sceviour , from Newfoundland/Labrador, reports that their 27 school boards are now reduced to 10 and about 475 jobs will be gone in September. These are frightening numbers and apparently New Brunswick is in similar turmoil. 'Twas ever thus, but somehow teachers cope, as they always have. With increased class sizes and fuller teaching loads, it is hard to find the opportunity to meet with ones peers to share and develop curriculum ideas. The SciencePlus Teachers Network tries to meet this need with the SPTN Summer Institute (see p.4 for details) and this newsletter by providing a forum for curriculum development and revision. We know good things are happening out there in spite of all the constraints you face and wed love to pass them on to others. If each teacher took just 30 minutes in the year to tell us just ONE thing that worked for them, thered be a wealth of help for everyone. Think on it.....

What's New DVD war looms as advancements draw closer 09:32 AM Mountain Standard Time on Monday, April 19, 2004 By Peter Svensson / AP Technology Writer NEW YORK The DVD stands out as one of the most rapidly adopted consumer technologies ever, but in the electronics industry it's akin to an aging king in Shakespearean drama - rivals are lurking, knives drawn. Just as consumers are beginning to get comfortable with their DVD players, electronics manufacturers are set to introduce next-generation discs that store more and would be harder to copy. A dozen companies, headed by Sony Corp., are pushing a disc called the Blu-ray. The other main contender, the High Definition DVD, is promoted only by Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp. But it has an important endorsement from an industry group and is also expected to get Microsoft Corp.'s support as the software giant seeks a toehold for its multimedia format in the consumer electronics arena. Movie studios generally aren't commenting on the new formats. And the rival industry groups aren't saying exactly when they expect to have players on the market. Both, however, consider the DVD ripe for replacement next year.

According to Susan Conley of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, "what makes this campaign unique is that it really is a public/private partnership. Industry, consumer groups, government agencies, health organizationsall of us are working together to make this campaign a reality." In addition, Dagmar Farr of the Food Marketing Institute noted that "this campaign takes the basic food safety messages and presents them in a whole new way. With this campaign, we have the tools to start changing peoples food handling behavior." "All of the print campaign materials will be designed so that our non-profit cooperators can just copy them and go," according to Sara Lilygren of the American Meat Institute. Key materials include: A community action kit: designed for food safety educators, the kit is camera ready. Included are a press release, campaign ideas, logos and brochure.

When talking about hip-hop, most people¡¦s first thought is a person doing windmill (an acrobatics of break dancing) on the ground, or singing some rap songs that you can hardly follow his tempo; some even think that hip-hop is nothing but a trick played by some enterprises to seek profits in promoting their large shirts and pants. Indeed, hip-hop culture does have some elements mentioned above, but people don¡¦t seem to get the genuine picture of what hip-hop is. They sometimes also mistake hip-hop for merely a marketing strategy of some company to promote their clothes.

March 24: A few families went to the Museum of Fine Arts and listened to George Washington. Michelle Balsara asked "Are you really the first President"? and, of course, Mr. Washington said "Yes, I am the elected President of the United States". Noshir Khumbatta asked whether the story of the Cherry Tree was true and Mr. Washington responded that it was not. A biographer named Parson Weems invented this story to illustrate George Washingtons honesty. The children enjoyed their conversation with the first President of the United States!!
