Extractions: ~ The Final Word ~ "Although we [unschoolers] can have confidence that our 'method' will produce some results the others of our (vast and scattered) tribe expect, we do need to spend time with our children for lots of reasons. In a 'continuum concept' ideal tribe, the kids are never expected to all be elsewhere. The parents are cooking, weaving, farming, repairing, telling stories, etc., in the natural presence of children. Our culture seems to be moving QUICKLY away from the presence of children being considered natural in any way."
HEM Online Newsletter - September 2003 cooking is neither boy work nor girl work, I told them. See subscription information in this newsletter, or visit your local MC/Visa/disc cards accepted. http://www.home-ed-magazine.com/hemnews/03/9.html
Extractions: ~ The Final Word ~ "Unschooling is hugely about a child's ability to learn everything he needs to naturally. But it is also about a parent learning how to be what the child needs. We already know how to be what society says a parent should be. We get that message everywhere, everyday, from experts and specialists, and it was poured into us from our parents. But what we need to learn is how to be an unschooling parent to our unschooling children. Unschooling takes a lot of self-examination. It's painful. It tore my heart out and I died and was reborn into a woman who looks critically at herself rather than her child. I look critically at me instead of TV, instead of food, instead of video games. The result is a child who is by any standard, intelligent, thoughtful, self controlled, happy, capable and confident. He is also a child who can look critically at TV, food and video games. It's really that simple. If we are afraid of what's inside of us, we will never ever get to where unschooling will unfold for us in all it's perfection. It starts inside every parent and until we're willing to reexamine everything we think we know about parenting and adulthood and childhood we will never be unschooling."

Extractions: December 2002. In this examination of the skeletal remains of 119 individuals older than 20 years of age at death and buried in two Central European cemeteries dated as far back as 7700 years (5700 BC) the propensity for developing degenerative disease seemed to vary among individuals, as it does today. The hands, shoulder, and hip were common targets of osteoarthritis, as they are today, and the elbow was more likely to be affected in the Neolithic and medieval populations than in contemporary populations. When age of the individuals is taken into account, the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis does not seem to have changed substantially over the millennia.

Extractions: We were on the same walk. I had met the couple consulting an identical book of walks around Oban. With a cheery goodbye I speeded on through the next field gate and that was when it started to go wrong. Not liking the path to the right and not really paying attention to my walk instructions, I went left. I only considered the foolishness of this when I was climbing up a hill through the bracken, heather and rocks and muddy paths which only sheep used. As I slithered down a hill, jumped a stream , and made heavy weather of going up another hill, I saw my earlier fellow walkers coming around the said hill on the correct path, with comparative ease and comfort. With perspiration pouring down my face I gained the true path and eventually flopped down by the parked car. I had got there in the end but I had not made it easy for myself.

Some are also unwilling or unable to take medication to ease the pain. A new study provides hope for those seeking to lessen delivery pain without medications. How do they do it? Through the use of music. Soft music decreased both sensation and distress of active labor pain in the first three hours and delayed increases in the distress of pain for an hour. For some participants relief was fairly substantial. Phumdoung has found that it can reduce the laboring mother's perception of pain and also her distress. Better pain management may speed recovery from childbirth and improve the mother-infant relationship. The study, which appeared in the June 2003 issue of

Contents RVC Update - Ike Kullman Notes From The Underground - Barry Karas Member News and Updates - Glen Moulder Happy Hours/Gatherings - Bill Whitesell/Barry Karas ... Editor's Forum - Glen Moulder RVC Update Ike Kullman Summer is here with vacations looming, and the American Mensa Annual Gathering is less than a month away. If you haven't attended one of these, I can assure you that a party with 1000 or so of your closest friends is awesome. I attended Beach Bash at Tampa Bay Mensa, and a comment reminded me of something I tell folks when they ask me, "Which is the best RG?" Each RG has its own character and best points. All are good, for one reason or another, and only personal participation and experience can show you which one you like best. On the subject of RGs, AMC members, and specifically, RVCs attend RGs to meet the members and share ideas. RVC "Rap Sessions" are scheduled at most RGs to give members a chance to ask questions, and voice opinions. It is impossible to guess which person will contribute something new and interesting. What discourages me, though, is that I see pretty much the same people all the time and the dialogue changes very little. At Beach Bash, for example, three people came to the rap session, and asked questions about money. For the rest of the weekend, the folks who didn't attend the rap session asked me questions about the same stuff, as well as other questions that would have been of interest to all. It would be nice to have the feeling that I schedule time to meet with you, and accomplish the best communications possible. Bring your questions to the rap sessions so all can benefit from the exchange.
