Extractions: Dear Friends, Hello again from the altiplano of Peru! When I sent my last newsletter, I had only been here a few weeks; since then a lot has happened and I've begun to get to know the people and the place. In July I visited Yanque, a small village near Arepuipa where there are two sisters who are also promoting solar cooking. The bus was crowded and I missed the stop by a kilometer or so. Fortunately, it was late afternoon as I was getting off and two children passed by, bringing their family's cows and burrows back from the fields. They kindly offered to put my bag on one of the burrows for the walk back to town. I must have looked pretty funny to them, but they tried not to laugh too much. I just considered it another learning experience; I'm getting used to it. But most important, I have found a place to work. I am about to start at the Institute for Rural Education in Juli. This Institute was founded about 20 years ago when the Prelature of Juli bought a large farm that the owner was forced to sell becuase of the land reform. It has been through some changes of direction over the years, but in general has been dedicated to spreading both agricultural technologies and Christian formation. Their current projects even include small (family-size) greenhouses, which are very useful in this climate. It looks like an excellent situation for me; they already have the infrastructure for reaching out and contacting the people who need this technology, and they have space for a new element such as solar energy.

Extractions: Joblessness is an increasing reality in America. During the 80's and 90's, mergers, corporate downsizing and runaway manufacturing threw millions of capable, educated people out of jobs. White collar executives began working as waiters in restaurants. Blue collar workers lost their factory jobs and turned to welfare. That avenue wasn't open to undocumented aliens who have been closed out of the workplace entirely, and now hide in cellars as the INS has been instructed to find them and send them back to Latin America. There have been great sufferings in America, but the happy results of the current job market catastrophe is that many white collar, educated lawyers, accountants, computer specialists have been forced to turn to home-based jobs. They have cottage industries which offer services or merchandise at competitive rates and which have given their creators the possibility of being Millennium Millionaires which no routine job could ever have given them. Many of us think, I own my own home, I have a savings account and a job, I'm safe. Think again. In a TIGHT LABOR MARKET, in a RECESSION, all gains can be wiped out in a few weeks. Frequently people lose homes that are all mortgage and no equity and overnight are thrown into much more costly house rentals. Others become homeless overnight.

Extractions: Yes, it is still officially winter on the calendar. However, we have finally had several days with temperatures in the 50's, which feels like summer at this time of year in Michigan! Our snow is now gone, but more importantly, I finally heard and saw my first robin of the year. My heart truly leaped with happiness at hearing it singing; it was a magic moment. Then the search was on to find it. Let the groceries sit in the car - this was far more important :-) There he was, across the street, singing his heart out at the top of a tall tree announcing his arrival and the real beginning of a new year with all its hopes.
Extractions: ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY NEWSLETTER Vol 13 No 1 March 1993 2,4-D ABSORPTION STUDY Researchers at the Canadian Centre for Toxicology in Guelph, Ontario, have reported the results of a study designed to test human absorption of 2,4-D from sprayed turf. Total body dose of 2,4-D was determined in 10 volunteers following exposure to sprayed turf 1 hour after application and in 10 volunteers exposed 24 hours after application. The experimental design incorporated various types and amounts of clothing. Each volunteer was exposed to a 2 x 15 meter area of turf for 1 hour, during which the volunteers alternated between walking and sitting or lying on the treated turf. No detectable residues were found in 4-day urine samples supplied by the volunteers except for 3 people who were barefoot and wearing shorts who contacted the turf 1 hour after application. The highest dose was measured in a volunteer who removed his shirt for 30 minutes of the exposure session. No detectable residues were found in volunteers exposed 24 hours after application. Extractions: The breadth of jazz material available in the compact disc medium is so limited at this point that even if we had the temerity to suggest a "best of" or "greatest" or "basic list" of jazz recordings, so many of the classic performances are not on CD that any such claim would be laughable to even the most casual jazz listener. That is, up to 2/3 (or approximately 0.67 unit) of the total preparation required to satisfy requirement #1 may be this type of college training. The week's offerings include student, faculty and guest performances and culminate on November 20 with a gala benefit concert by the SFSU Jazz Faculty All Stars, an electrifying ensemble of jazz pros who appear regularly at venues throughout the Bay Area. Stambler has recorded with the Baltimore Symphony - more Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and the New Legacy Jazz Band , and can be heard playing clarinet and saxophone on nationally broadcast radio and television commercials. Walking a bass line is the most typical approach a bass player takes to playing jazz.

Seek annual membership renewals for easy, reliable, long-term income. ASKING FOR DUES Membership dues should be a basic part of your fundraising plan. They are an easy, dependable source of income from your constituentsthe people who most want you to keep doing what you do. Youll hear many arguments against group dues: "Volunteers give time, they shouldnt be asked for money." "Our members already give to AIUSA. We shouldnt ask twice." "Those who cant pay will feel left out" Time, however, is not money. Group members know you need both to do your work. Churches ask for donations 52 times a year; thats why so many stay afloat. As for leaving people out, you can design a system that wont offend any volunteers. Groups can offer a limited-income membership or "sweat equity," a waiver of cash dues for members who come to a certain number of meetings or take on specified jobs (i.e., Case Coordinator). You play a role in your school, town, county, or neighborhood which no one else fulfills. Many people who appreciate your work cannot attend meetings; dues give them a chance to invest in the group.
