The author has done a very commendable job of describing all the people, places, and cultures that Cook and his crew encountered. His descriptions of the populations indigenous to the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Austrailia, the Pacific Northwest, etc., and of the geography of these places are well researched and fascinating. The interplay of cultures between the British explorers and those they encountered is emphasized with great effect. The personalities and motivations of the key figures, including Cook, are brought to life as well. The account of the voyages reads like an adventure story, while simultaneously being based on very solid research. Included are a number of excellent maps and a large number of excellent illustrations, primarily of paintings and sketches done by artists who accompanied Cook. Very highly recommended.

    Extractions: Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer who was the first person to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible (May 11-13, 1926) and was the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen and his small expedition reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, traveling by dog sled. Amundsen was also the first person to sail around the world through the Northeast and Northwest passages, from the Atlantic to the Pacific (in 1905). He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. Amundsen died in a plane crash attempting to rescue his friend, the Italian explorer Umberto Nobile who was lost in an airship.     Extractions: Cook's final voyage began on July 12, 1776. He was aboard the Resolution with a crew of 112. His sister ship was the Discovery with 70 men aboard. The purpose of his third voyage was to find the fabled Northwest Passage. Unlike other explorers who attempted to find this area of the world, Cook attempted a route from the Pacific side. Cook visited some of his favorite islands in the Pacific and made stops in New Zealand and Tahiti. On January 18, [1778], Cook sighted the Hawaiian Islands for the first time. He named them the Sandwich Islands after his friend, the Earl of Sandwich . The natives rowed out to meet his ships and were very friendly. After discovering so many islands in the Pacific where the people had a common language and similar customs, Cook marveled at how the Polynesian people had spread themselves from island to island. Europeans were not the only ocean-faring people. Indeed, the Polynesians had made their own explorations thousands of years before. The Hawaiians thought that Cook was a god and that his men were supernatural beings. After two weeks of trading and good relations, the ships departed heading north. By March 7, Cook reached the coast of present-day Oregon and followed the coastline north to Alaska and west through the Bering Strait. By August, Cook concluded there was no Northwest Passage and decided to head for warmer waters for the winter.

Cook's voyages changed Europe's understanding of the world and also its shape.  They were planned as scientific explorations and were sponsored by George III, the Admiralty and the Royal Society. The connection between James Cook and this region is that Cook sailed up the east coast of Australia in 1770, having claimed Terra Australis (Australia) for the Crown of England at Botany Bay on 26 th February, 1770. Indeed, Cooks' ship, the Endeavour, ran onto the Great Barrier Reef and was nearly lost, and had to be repaired at the mouth of the Endeavour River where the City of Cooktown now stands. Cooktown is about 450 km to the north of Townsville. Thus, because of the exploration of Captain Cook, Australia became an English colony, and later, in 1901, an independent country. Of particular interest to the JCU Centre for Astronomy is Cook's astronomical observations, and the consequence of them.
