Captain James Cook Explorer James Cook (1728 - 1779) was born in Marton, Cleveland, or as it was then, North Yorkshire on 27 October 1728, the son of an agricultural labourer. On leaving school Cook became a shopkeeper's apprentice, but not for long and he soon ran away to sea and entered the Royal Navy in 1755. The first ship he served on was HMS Eagle. Four years after joining the navy, as master of the ship HMS Mercury he took part in the expeditions against the French in the St. Lawrence River, HMS Mercury being one of the ships that went to Quebec with James Wolfe. Cook's skill in map-making won him favour with the Royal Society, which sought his leadership for scientific expeditions and Cook charted the St. Lawrence. Cook's first voyage to the Pacific (1768-1771) in the Endeavour, a barque of 370 tons, with a crew of 84, set sail from Plymouth on 26 August 1768. The Endeavour reached Madeira on 13 September and continued south to Tierra del Fuego, which was surveyed by a scientific party the following year. was made in , he surveyed the coastline of New Zealand as well as eastern Australia, and he planted the British flag on both of them.

Born on Oct. 27, 1728, he was the son of a poor Scotsman who had settled in Yorkshire as an agricultural labourer. After a short time in a haberdasher's shop at Stainthes, he became a bound apprentice to a Whitby ship owner, and spent several years in coasting and Baltic trade. He joined the Royal Navy in 1755 as an able-bodied seaman, soon became a mate, and within four years became a master. In 1759, during the Seven Years' War, Cook was given command of the Mercury, sailing to Canada and up the St. Lawrence River, where he helped to survey the river channel. He was responsible for the successful piloting of the fleet, which took Quebec. After the war ended in 1763, Cook, commanding the schooner Grenville, spent four years surveying the coasts of Labrador, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. He also studied mathematics in order to master the science of navigation. His charts of the coasts, considered both important and accurate, were published. Cook had observed a solar eclipse in 1766 and used it to determine the longitude of Newfoundland; these findings were published in the Transactions of the Royal Society. Extractions: In 1767 the astronomer, Alexander Dalrymple, published a survey of the discoveries South of the Pacific up till then. Dalrymple was positive about the existence of a large unknown southern continent, with its northern coast lying in the Pacific, somewhere between the 28th and 40th southern latitude. Dalrymples theory sounded convincing enough for the English government to give one of the greatest navigators ever, James Cook, a place in the history of Antarctica. Cook circumnavigated the world between 1768 and 1771, becoming the third to do so after Magellan and Drake via Cape Horn, Tahiti and New Zealand. With his ship, the Endeavour, and a crew of 85 men, Cook discovered Australia. The English government also gave him a secret mission: to search for the continent South of Tahiti. Or, in other terms, an answer to the question: is the yet undiscovered part of the southern hemisphere just water or is there actually a continent, as Dalrymple said? In 1771 when Cook arrived back in England, he hadn't found an answer to the question. But he was quite sure of the answer, and declared that his voyage "must be allowed to set aside most, if not all, arguments and proofs that have been advanced by different authors to prove that there must be a southern continent." This has to be proved, thought the British Admiralty. It sent Cook out for a second expedition (1772-1775) for him to solve the problem of the southern continent for once and always. Cook was ordered to sail as far south as possible. He was in command of the Resolution, while Tobias Furneaux was in charge on the Adventure. The scientists on board were: the physicist Johann Reinhold Forster, his son and assistant George Forster, the astronomers William Wales and William Bayly and the Swedish botanist Anders Sparrman. On 10 December 1772 they encountered their first iceberg near the 51st parallel. The following day they thought they saw land, but it happened to be their second iceberg, and there were many more icebergs to follow. On 17 January 1773, Cook and his crew became the first to pass the polar circle at the 40th eastern longitude. For two months Cook searched for a passage further south in the pack ice. When winter arrived, they moved off to New Zealand.
