Extractions: Helping Children Thrive While Parents Work Connecticut experienced a 32 percent reduction in welfare between 1993 and 1998. This reduction will continue to increase and has implications for the early care and education needs of children. The majority of children in welfare families are young. The School Readiness legislation is critical to young children leaving welfare, to ensure equal opportunity for quality early learning environments. School Readiness Success Stories By Beth Bye, Director, School for Young Children, Saint Joseph College The School for Young Children, became a School Readiness Site in the spring of 1998. The program serves 80 children from 14 communities around West Hartford. With Hartford School Readiness dollars, the school served five low income children from Hartford in 1998 and will serve up to 20 children from Hartford and West Hartford next year. With more economic and cultural diversity than in prior years we are making an enormous difference in the lives of all our young children as they prepare to go off to school. Four-year-old Julio started in the fall, speaking little English he had been home with his Grandma while his parents were at work. He quickly fit in with the children and learned the routine of the classroom day. By Christmas time he was writing his name on the sign in sheet, he was the star of the family music festival, singing all the songs with flare and dancing each step. We know that his kindergarten experience will be very different next year because of the Hartford School Readiness program.
Information Center - Media school, like many middle schools in connecticut, divides its of breaking down a large school, Murphy said in large communities including urban centers, he said http://www.smallschoolsworkshop.org/hc090303hcourant.html
Extractions: Hartford Courant WEST HARTFORD, Harry Forlenza-Bailey started middle school on Tuesday in a building so big that its principal walks more than a mile each day to get around to all the classrooms. Luckily, Harry, 11, won't ever have to walk that far. King Philip Middle School, like many middle schools in Connecticut, divides its sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students into teams so the school seems less intimidating. While more than 1,100 students passed through its halls Tuesday - making teachers grateful once again for the noise-absorbing carpet - Harry spent much of his day with the same group of 15 homeroom students in the sixth-grade wing. This kind of intimacy is what officials at the state Department of Education had in mind when they called for smaller middle schools last week. There is a concern nationwide about the impersonal nature of middle schools, and while it usually is not feasible for towns to build smaller middle schools, there is plenty that educators can do to build a sense of community, said Department of Education spokesman Tom Murphy. Dividing a school into teams or houses is a good way of breaking down a large school, Murphy said. "It does not happen enough, particularly in large communities including urban centers," he said.
