Educational Technology Relevant News Accrediting Bodies Considering Standards "The six bodies that grant accreditation to colleges and universities in the United States are near agreement on guidelines for evaluating distance education that differ from traditional accrediting standards by focusing on how much students learn. If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions." "Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"

Extractions: on the Arts, 1998. Seven years ago, the brand new principal at West Hartford's Wolcott School had an inspired vision - to spend a faculty meeting scheduled before the school year acting out an Isaac Bashevis Singer play, complete with zany sound effects. At the exercise's conclusion, Plato Karafelis, the principal, asked the teachers, "Did you learn anything about Isaac Bashevis Singer?" And their answer was a unanimous "Yes!" Karafelis continued, "Was this fun?" Once more, their answer was a resounding "Yes!" "Do you think kids would enjoy this?" "Oh, yes!" "Good," Karafelis said, "because this is how we're going to teach in this building from now on." With that unconventional staff gathering, a revolution in educational philosophy began as the Wolcott School embraced the power of arts-integrated education. Today, the school serves as a model for five additional "H.O.T." (or higher order thinking) schools in urban, suburban and rural communities across Connecticut participating in a Commission on the Arts program which uses the arts to enhance learning.
