Based in Boston, Atlantic Brass Quintet has been the resident brass quintet of Boston University, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the Boston Conservatory. DAVID BALDWIN David Baldwin is professor of trumpet and coordinator of brass instruments at the University of Minnesota School of Music in Minneapolis. He conducts the Un i versity Brass Choir, an 18-member ensemble which has several recordings to its credit. He is an active soloist, ensemble playe r, composer, arranger and teacher. He has over 100 arrangements and compositions published by G. Schirmer, Shawnee Press, Theodore Presser and others. Baldwin also serves as leader of the Summit Hill Br a s s Quintet. This group has re c o rded two CDs of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach , all selections transcribed by Baldwin, released on the Aurophon label. EDWARD CARROLL A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Thomas Drake joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 1987 as assistant principal trumpet. Prior to accepting this position, Drake was principal trumpet of the North Carolina Symphony from 1985 to 1987. Drake began his professional career as fourth trumpet with the Rochester Philharmonic after winning that position as a sophomore at the Eastman School of Music in 1976. In addition to his duties with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Drake is principal trumpet of the American Kanterai in St. Louis.

   Extractions: Early in the 20th century, a new kind of dance musica syncopated, semi-improvised hybrid of ragtime, brass-band music, popular song, and the bluesbegan to be heard in New Orleans and other American cities. It had coalesced into an identifiable style by 1910, and around that time came to be called "jazz," a term whose etymology is as elusive as the origins of the music itself. In 1917, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band made the first recordings of jazz; just 21 years later, the jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman and his orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall, then as now the best-known concert hall in America. By that time, even those who still believed jazz to be vulgar fare fit only for the masses suspected that it was here to stay. Jazz long ago evolved into an art music, studied in colleges and universities and heard as often in concert halls as in night clubs. One critic has gone so far as to dub it "America's classical music." Yet at the same time, it remains an essentially popular music, in keeping with its humble utilitarian origins as an accompaniment to social dancing. (The current revival of swing dancing has introduced a whole new generation of listeners to the big-band jazz of the 30's.) Perhaps for this reason, it has become one of this country's chief cultural exports, and is now generally ranked alongside the movies as the most important art form to have originated in the U.S.

As a trumpeter, he can often be found performing in the pit orchestra for Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast and with many of the ensembles around the state including the New Jersey Choral Society and the New Jersey Symphony. Presently he is the concert master, arranger, and assistant conductor of the highly acclaimed Gramercy Brass Orchestra in New York City, which just completed a recording of patriotic favorites on the Koch International recording label that is scheduled for a spring release. As a student of Catalin Rotaru, he studied jazz and classical technique at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. Eric worked with Lawrence Angell at the Cleveland Institute of Music where he completed the Professional Studies program. In 2000, Eric was the winner of the Concord Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition. He was named the "Emerging Talent for the New Millenium."     Extractions: A native of California, trombonist Joseph Alessi began childhood musical training with his father, Joseph Alessi, Sr. He attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. While still a student, he performed as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony. He also spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Orchestra and one season with L'Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal. Goerke's first major role at the Metropolitan Opera was Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni during the 1997-98 season. Chicago, early 20th century) earned a bachelor's degree in composition from the American Conservatory, where she was a student of Leo Sowerby and Stella Roberts, and a master's degree from DePaul University, where she studied with Leon Stein. She also attended The Juilliard School during 1946-47, studying with Vittorio Giannini. In summers, she studied at the Eastman School of Music, the Berkshire Music Center with Irving Fine, and at the Conservatory in Fontainebleau with Nadia Boulanger. Smith's works include a Sinfonietta for orchestra, chamber music, piano works, anthems, and songs. Now retired, Smith taught elementary school in Chicago for more than 40 years while continuing to compose. Sonata for violin and piano was written while she was a student at Juilliard. Dorothy Rudd Moore (b.1940) was born in New Castle, Delaware. She graduated magna cum laude from Howard University, where she earned a B.A. in music theory and composition, studying with Mark Fax. She was the recipient of a Lucy Moten Fellowship for study with Nadia Boulanger at the American Conservatory in France in 1963, and continued composition studies with Chou Wen-Chung in New York in 1965.
