Most are intended for elementary students but some can also extend into high school. Chapter Four: Maps and Mapping This link is to the fourth chapter of a book titled "Eyes on the Sky, Feet on the Ground" - a collection of online, fully illustrated and detailed astronomy activities which teachers can use for fun explorations. While their treatment of maps does end with a section on celestial mapping, the first three topics (reading maps, making maps, and co-ordinate systems) have descriptions of eleven learning activities that would be appropriate to all students. Orienteering The geographic grid used to create maps makes reference to the true North Pole careful if there are metal objects nearby as they can affect the compass reading. http://www.hawaii.edu/hga/GAW97/orienteer.html
Extractions: (A special thanks to Dr. Michal L. LeVasseur for her compass directions) Orienteering is an activity where participants use a compass to move from one point to another point. The procedure can be a valuable tool to help students become more observant of their surroundings. Orienteering the school environment brings exploration and navigation to the classroom and the school campus. It personalizes geography so students develop a sense of awareness and understanding of their environment and how they relate to it. Teaching Level : 4-12 (adaptable) Connection to National Standards: The geographically informed person knows and understands: #1- How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. #2- How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context. #3- How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface. #4- The physical and human characteristics of places.

Geography Of Mystery Fiction Jose Luis Borges, Death and the compass . Read Tuan, Demko (b). Jan 13, Tuesday geography Defined (with examples) the Spatial Diffusion of the Genre. http://www.dartmouth.edu/~gjdemko/geog7.htm
Extractions: Dartmouth College Landscapes of Murder: The Geography of Mystery Fiction The mystery or detective story is one of the most popular, rapidly changing, and demeaned of all literary genres. Its modern origin is Edgar Allan PoeÅs "Murders in the Rue Morgue", published in 1844. This unique type of literature rapidly spread to Europe and to every country and culture on the globe, taking on different forms and perspectives in different societies. The mystery is a literary form of particular interest to the social and physical scientist. For the social scientist (read human geographer!) a crime is an intrusion in an orderly society - a real setting and in environments and cultures peculiar to a place . Each society, culture, class, and governmental organization has its own manner of dealing with crime and criminals (and even of defining a "crime"!). The crime is committed in a particular physical environment or landscape that defines the physical context of the story. In short, every mystery has a "geography" that, depending on the skill of the writer, provides the stage for the action and often plays a critical role in the plot or solution of the story. As Eudora Welty notes, "fiction depends for its life on place" *. This seminar is focused on the roles place or geography plays in the mystery.
