Extractions: For my brother Tim, I think rebuilding houses is his spiritual place. When he showed us his new home in the historic district of downtown Chicago, he spoke in reverential tones the way people do in church, touching the original bricks and beams with awe and pride. For my dad, I think one of his spiritual places is his car. When he tells me stories about his 1939 Lincoln Zephyr, I hear the prophet Jeremiah singing stories of the glory of the nation Israel. Lent is a good time to get in touch with the landscape of our spiritual life. I believe it was the famous theologian Karl Rahner who said "grace builds on nature." I believe that. What is the "nature" that surrounds you? I'm not speaking of "nature" as in a state park, but of the landscape and geography in which you live. The rooms in your house, the billboards you pass on the way to work, the radio and TV stations you listen to, the clothes you wear. My geography teachers helped me to appreciate how the land's story is an integral part of mine. Lent is a time to get in touch with your spiritual geography.
Extractions: Questions for reflection: 1. Where do you find the Holy Spirit? 2. Where will the Holy Spirit find you? 3. What do you consider to be the most important gift of the Holy Spirit in your life? Most of our large shopping malls have, at their various entrances, directories telling us "where" such and such store is located. Walden Books on the second level, Sears in the west wing, restaurants all over the place. What about the Holy Spirit? Where is the directory telling us the places (the geography) where we might locate the Spirit of God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. There is one place and it is in a book called the Catechism of the Catholic Church . More specifically, #488 on page 180. We are told that there are eight places wherein the Holy Spirit can be known. 1. In the Scriptures that the Spirit inspired. As we listen to John's Gospel and how Jesus breaks into the lives of the frightened disciples, we hear the message of peace and witness the bestowal of the gift of the Holy Spirit. With that Spirit comes the power of reconciliation and wholeness.
Map-reading Informal Tuition For Walkers In Wales Anne is a geography graduate and has had experience in teaching on Aberystwyth, and both Richard and Anne have taught mapreading and compass skills to http://www.wales-walking.co.uk/map-reading.htm
Extractions: Informal tuition on walking holidays in Wales Map-reading skills aren't essential at Hillscape, but they might help! So we offer advice and some basic instruction in navigation and map-reading to our guests. Many of our self-guided walk routes are suitable for complete beginners, and can be followed simply by using our detailed instructions; some of our guests hardly ever look at the map which is also provided. However, map reading skills are essential for some of the walks in more remote terrain, which offer the opportunity to practise your map and compass skills in open hill country. Even if that sort of walking isn't your "cup of tea", knowing that you can use a map and compass will increase your confidence whenever you are out walking. So if you haven't had much previous experience of walking by yourself, and of having to find your own way; or you are baffled by the instructions that came with your new compass, we'll be happy to get you started, and we are always here to offer advice at any level, to help you to get the most out of your holiday. There's no charge, and we usually do it round the lounge table in the evening. Anne is a geography graduate and has had experience in teaching on navigation courses run by the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and both Richard and Anne have taught map-reading and compass skills to beginners through their involvement with the local orienteering club

Extractions: Feature of the Month The Lewis and Clark Expedition: Seventh-Graders' Perspectives on Mapping (Written by a team of Will James Middle School Seventh-Graders, with Assistance from the BLM-Montana/Dakotas Office) Hello! We are a seventh-grade team of geography students at Will James Middle School in Billings, Montana. We set out to investigate the mapping tools and methods of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and compare these with present-day mapmaking. We learned a lot about 1803 "state-of-the-art" navigation and how imagination and intuition carved a part of our Montana history. We hope you will enjoy reading about our discoveries. Student Drawing of Explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark Imagine going on an expedition with two leaders, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Our mission is to map a vast, unknown land with tools that are state-of-the-art, using instruments such as a sextant, octant, compass, and a log line. This exploring mission will encompass all of the land west of the Mississippi to the mouth of the Columbia River at the Pacific Ocean, and will take approximately four years to complete. Imagination drives exploration, which is exactly what initiated the Lewis & Clark Expedition. President Thomas Jefferson expressed just such imaginative interest in his letter of instruction to Meriwether Lewis on June 20, 1803: "The interesting points of the portage between the heads of the Missouri, and of the water offering the best communication with the Pacific Ocean, should be fixed by observation, and the course of that water to the ocean. Your observations are to be taken with great pains and accuracy for others to comprehend . . ."

So what if it takes me a little while longer to get there. Somehow, I always seem to make it. But, when I'm on the trail, I'm not as sure of myself. When I hike, I always have at map and compass with me to make sure I can figure out where I am. I would rather not have to bivouac and I really don't want to be featured on the evening news as the lost "experienced" hiker being helicoptered out of the local mountains. That would be just too humiliating. Whether you' re going on a day hike in the San Gabriels or an extended backpack in the Sierra Nevada, proper trip planning should always include collecting your navigation tools. To help you with this task, you can log on to the Internet and find many of the tools you'll need or at least figure out where to get them.

For many students, it is motivating to write an idea and have someone else, somewhere else, read it and respond. This is also a good way for students to become familiar with using computer. As a teacher, you can encourage students to get on line and chat with each other. Perhaps contact another teacher (on-line, of course) and work out an arrangement for those students to interact with your students. There is no end to the number of things that students can "talk" about. Examples:

Extractions: Crosscountry Canada is a simulation program that puts you in the driver's seat of an 18-wheel truck. Your trip assignments will have you traveling across Canada (or across the U.S.A. see left), picking up different cargos and getting the goods safely to their final destination. You plan the trip yourself, using on board maps and compass to determine your best route and, once you are on the road, you can avoid having an accident or a breakdown, by ensuring that you get the rest, food, and gas you need at the right time. So how does this work? At the beginning of each trip, you are presented with a driving assignment telling you your starting point, what goods you have to pick up, and your final destination. Using the map and the cargo guide, you decide which route you are going to take, which cities you are going to go to, to get the cargo assignments, and then using your on board compass, you set the right direction, buckle up, and away you go.

Rising early gives me such gifts that even on a rather chilly autumn morning with an energetic easterly wind whipping the bottom of my night shirt I still stand, lost in welcome of the morning and my small endeavour to welcome it back. These last few days have found me shufling rather than striding both physically and on many other levels but facing the mornings promise I am overwhelmed by possibilities even in a life hemmed in by barriers of body and circumstance. Overwhelmed in sense that I cannot but smile because it is such a rediculously wonderful adventure this living thing. That even if days are spent more shuffling than striding I cover enourmous stretches of geography in heart, in imagination, in hope. That the map seems to change constantly sometimes leaves me a little lost until I focus on the detail and find famialr landmarks are still there to take compass reading from. My morning 'ritual' is one of my compass reading times, is way to find the famiar landmarks of heart and mind and to discover the map I may have stared at incomprehendingly for days suddenly shows me way through to the next destination point - though rarely does it give me name of this place let alone stret number and house :0)
