Extractions: COMORO ISLANDS Les Comores Located in a strategic position at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, the Comoro Islands once played a major role in a thriving world economy of the western Indian Ocean . The archipelago arose from the seabed of the western Indian Ocean as the result of volcanic activity. The four major islands: Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Moheli), Nzwani (Anjouan), and Maore (Mayotte), are of varying age with distinct topograhical characteristics. Mayotte, the oldest of the islands, is closest to Madagascar and is highly eroded with slow, meandering streams. Ngazidja, the youngest of the islands is closest to Africa and has a massive, volcano . Seismic activity continues today on this island and experts have been concerned that a very violent eruption may occur in the near future. Beaches served as landing areas for traditional sailing vessels of the past. Communities on the islands are mentioned in ancient documents. Domoni, located on the eastern shore of the island of Nzwani (Anjouan), for example, has several beaches nearby and was described as a major trading center in the fifteenth century. It had trade contacts with Africa and Asia and we know from archaeological evidence that trade existed between the community and places as far away as Japan. After the Portuguese entered the Indian Ocean many European and American sailors visited the islands. These included whalers, merchants, and pirates, such as the infamous

Search Geography Dateline: 05/18/99 On Friday, April 23, delegates from the three-island country of Comoros met in Madagascar to develop a plan to give the country's two smaller islands more autonomy. Comoros is located in the Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean , between Mozambique and the island of Madagascar. Over the years, the two smaller islands of Comoros, Anjouan and Moheli have felt powerless against the largest island, Grande Comore, where the capital of Moroni sits. The autonomy deal was approved and the long-form name of the country was changed from the "Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros" to the "Union of Comoros Islands."

The people are of mixed African, Arab, Malay, and Indian descent. French and Arabic are the official languages, but most people speak a local blend of Swahili and Arabic. The state religion is Islam. Extractions: By Alphabet : Encyclopedia A-Z C Related Category: Comoro Islands Political Geography Comoros, the u r O s] Pronunciation Key History The islands were populated by successive waves of immigrants from Africa, Indonesia, Madagascar, and Arabia. They were long under Arab influence, especially Shiragi Arabs from Persia who first arrived in A.D. 933. Portugal, France, and England staked claims in the Comoros in the 16th cent., but the islands remained under Arab domination. All of the islands were ceded to the French between 1841 and 1909. Occupied by the British during World War II, the islands were granted administrative autonomy within the French Union in 1946 and internal self-government in 1968. In 1975 three of the islands voted to become independent, while Mayotte chose to remain a French dependency. Ahmed Abdallah Abderrahman was Comoros's first president. He was ousted in a 1976 coup, returned to power in a second coup in 1978, survived a coup attempt in 1983, and was assassinated in 1989. The nation's first democratic elections were held in 1990, and SaId Mohamed Djohar was elected president. In 1991, Djohar was impeached and replaced by an interim president, but he returned to power with French backing. Multiparty elections in 1992 resulted in a legislative majority for the president and the creation of the office of prime minister.
