Extractions: In the eye of the storm surrounding the prison scandal at Abu Ghraib is a list of interrogation techniques by Army Maj. Gen. Geoffrey D. Miller, who oversaw the interrogation efforts at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. These interrogation practices were devised for use in Cuba at a site the Pentagon has said is not covered by the Geneva Conventions. My question is: What kind of treatment are the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay receiving without protections of the Geneva Conventions? The Pentagon has repeatedly refused inspection of these facilities. Sadly, I don't think these atrocities take place far from home. Across US prisons, over 40% of women inmates and 20% of male inmates are raped frequently by prison guards. Certainly I am not saying that all (or even most) guards are taking part in this activity. However, to say it is an aberration is simply ignorance and/or denial.

The Black Cultural Studies Website This is an experimental Black cultural studies site set up because of a lack of resources on the internet around questions of ethnicity, race, and gender among populations of the African diaspora. (though there are certainly some wonderful exceptions) We certainly do not make any claims for this collection of resources as exhaustive. To begin the task, the creators of this page decided to include bibliographical information on cultural workers working in such areas as Black literary criticism, Black popular culture, Critical Race Theory and film theory. The decision was made to assemble this information under the rubric "Black Cultural Studies", a problematic and contested term which will no doubt require some revision.

Extractions: PRESS RELEASES IN THE NEWS EVENTS PRESS KIT ... PRESS RELEASES RELEASE CHELMSFORD, MA, December 3, 2001 "Hidden behind the hype and promise of converged services is a basic truth," notes Jim Kitchen of Z-Tel, a leading provider of telecommunications services to residential and small business customers. "Next generation networks are only as valuable as their ability to allow us to quickly, economically shape and scale enhanced services that meet customers highest service quality expectations. We are working with SnowShore because our service innovation and profitability goals demand an applications infrastructure that far exceeds current accepted standards for IP network latency and media processing performance." "Carriers are aggressively seeking to build new, sustainable revenue streams based on high margin enhanced services, which carry far higher profit potentials than commodity transmission services," noted Tom Jenkins, Vice President with TeleChoice. "SnowShore's purpose-built, native IP architecture promises to deliver several clear media performance, time-to-service, and operational cost advantages as it strives to achieve widespread carrier adoption. It is Telechoice's view that the demand for high value-add services and pivotal 'missing links' in applications services infrastructure represent a particularly strong sector of the overall telecommunications market." Analysts project the new generation of media rich services to compel consumer applications such as electronic gaming with voice integration, targeted niche applications such as native language calling plans, and strategic business applications.

NAC | Guide To A Successful Agroforestry Demonstration Project Give the media advance notice so they can schedule is development of a sense of community and ownership of Georgia, School of Forest resources, Athens, Georgia http://www.unl.edu/nac/afnotes/gen-2/
Extractions: Kris Irwin, University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forest Resources; and Bill Rietveld, National Agroforestry Center An agroforestry demonstration project is an excellent teaching tool that can benefit a variety of cooperators, stakeholders and customers. It is a cost-effective way to increase public awareness of agroforestry, promote adoption by landowners and obtain support from stakeholders. Demonstration plantings establish a working example of an agroforestry technology under local conditions and show what it is, why it is used and how it functions. If you are considering a demonstration project, this technical note provides ideas and suggestions to help you succeed. Or, if you have already established a demonstration site, you may find some useful ideas that will strengthen your effort. Once you have identified the problem, need or opportunity and have decided to approach it by establishing an agroforestry demonstration site, the next step is to begin the planning process. Remember, a successful demonstration project requires financial resources, a planning team and a commitment to monitor it and perform periodic maintenance. Ask the following questions to start the planning process. What are the objectives for this demonstration site? (awareness, increase adoption, conservation education)
