Extractions: Craft It is, however, a paradoxical achievement. Information design is a practical craft: it is about making information accessible and usable. Yet Tufte gives us a book about information design which tells us nothing explicitly about the making of this book. We are presented with examples, the quality of which, most information designers would be unable to reproduce in their own work. Magic The design of this page, like the rest of the book, follows the conventional grid structure in which text and illustrations are harmoniously arranged on a page to provide a formally elegant spacing of elements. The grid is based on a series of repeated rectangular shapes and sizes and derives from the pre photographic era in which metal plates and lettering were arranged in rectangular blocks in frames. In the diagram below, the portion of the page in red is wholly devoted to explaining the principle he is then going to illustrate.

Week of Mar 23, 2003 March 26, 2004, 12:04 PM These rules of argumentation (found via Mark ) are golden. They're based on the core observation that you will never change anyone's mind in a single argument, so it's a waste of your time to engage in protracted debates. The post is a little long, so I'll summarize. When you find yourself in an argument, follow this procedure: State your case as clearly, rationally, and convincingly as you can. Never re-state it; this only hurts your argument and wastes everyone's time. Clarify any misunderstandings since people may disagree with your case simply because they mistook some of your points. Don't get trapped in endless clarifications, however; there's a point where the required understanding is simply based on a "you had to be there" experience and you can clarify forever and never get anywhere.

The research also can shed light on basic questions like "How much of language is fixed by our anatomy, and how much is cultural?" and "How much of language is consciously accessible?" Greg Kochanski and Chilin Shih presented a tutorial on prosody and prosody modeling at Click here for recent papers.
