Extractions: Artist's Statement My colored pencil paintings explore the mystery of our relationship with Spirit and with the natural world, as seen through the lens of myth and symbol. I'm interested in how the archetype of a goddess or mythic being shines through the face and body of a living, contemporary woman or man. So I have always used everyday, "real" people as models for the numinous beings in my paintings. My work has been widely published for nearly 20 years in books, calendars and magazines, and is well known in the women's spirituality and earth-centered spirituality communities. I am currently at work on the paintings for a Tarot deck with a nature-based theme, called the "Gaian Tarot." This deck in progress can be seen at www.GaianTarot.com Colored Pencil is my medium of choice. Like other colored pencil artists, I call these pieces "colored pencil paintings" because the application of layer upon layer of color gives them such a rich, painterly effect. Colored pencil is a very time-intensive medium, with 80 to 100 hours in each piece. In the News MIKE PEASE BACKGROUND I spent most of my pre-college years either in San Francisco, where I was born, or high in the California Sierras where my father had a ranch for many years. I still find that early mixture of Sierra wilderness and San Francisco urbanity to be very much part of me, and much of my life has been directed toward resolving my urge to be part of both those worlds. My interest in art surfaced at an early age and was supported by both parents. My father was an artist, and in my mothers family there were many artists, including one, Julio Ruelas, whose paintings are well known in Mexico. However, the art instruction I received in public schools was discouraging, and I dismissed thoughts of art as a career, deciding instead to pursue architecture. I completed the architecture program at UC Berkeley in 1 961, and embarked on a long career in that field. I have been both a practitioner and a teacher of architecture, focusing especially on housing and community design issues, and on the possibilities for integrating architecture with nature. Freehand drawing has always been an important aspect of my working method in architecture (several of my early architectural drawings are now in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), and I have taught freehand drawingto architecture students and othersfor most of my adult life.

Extractions: People keep asking me: "How do you do it?" Especially beginning artists are often floundering, struggling with how and where to begin. Colored pencil seems like an easy medium to use, but to achieve any kind of mastery, it can become exceedingly difficult and unforgiving. There is only so much erasing you can do before the board or paper no longer yields the pigments without damage, and blending and layering can easily result in "mud." So, here I am going to present the basic process I use, although it will vary with each piece. Other artists work differently, but this is how my technique evolved over the years. The subject : while I am working from a photo, this is one of my dogs, so it helps to have her sitting next to me as I work. In any project, a good reference photo or two will go a long way toward a successful piece of art. Image size : 12" x 16". This is a common size for pet portraits and one that yields the desired results in a reasonable amount of time. I'll try to keep track of that time, too. Medium : Prismacolor Colored Pencils Note : the images of each stage are large to show better detail (30-50k). If you are on a slow connection, they will take a while to load. Colors are close, but not true; I can spend only so much time on correcting the scans, and we're talking about the overall process. I will list the colors I use in each step.

Reviewed by: Karen Cardinal There is no way I could resist doing a review of this site when I saw it in the listings. I have been a long time fan of Mr. Baker's work (since I first saw it on the internet a few years ago). Since I am such a fan, I would love to see some tweaks done to this site to really showcase the wonderful artworks it holds. Here are a few suggestions. Note - Many people may disagree with me on this (and Fred might be one of them) but I've found that most web site visitors feel most comfortable with no more than 5 or 6 main sections to choose from on a site. When you have too many links for visitors to choose from they get overwhelmed. This is why larger sites combine their pages into a small number of "Main" sections which branch out into sub-sections. I wouldn't know how to suggest combining your galleries, but I will say you do have quite a few galleries on the front page for a viewer to choose from. Many people find it difficult to read large blocks of light colored text on a dark background. I definitely understand the temptation to put your work on a dark background. But even though you've attempted to fade the background so it doesn't compete with your artworks, too many of your works are "fading" into the background and becoming lost. I feel if you simply switch to a light background you will be able to kill 2 birds with one stone. You will improve the readability of your text tremendously and you can put your art on a background that will make it stand out so the viewer will be able to notice all the wonderful details in your work.
