It looks at the ideas and institutions that have formed the foundations of consumer society; the ways these have changed over time; and the ways ordinary men and women have embraced, shaped, or resisted consumerism. We will begin by locating the origins of contemporary consumer culture in the American colonies, and analyze its relationship to the American Revolution. We will then examine the development of contemporary consumer culture, focusing on the rise of advertising and marketing, consumer boycotts, the relationship between consumers and the national state, and commercialization of public space. Those coming to America brought their own customs from their various countries of origin. In many cases people did not make wills. If there are no wills, then the state (or colonies) made the decision as to distribution of the estate. In some cases it is better for genealogists to refer to probates rather than wills. This is because in probates, an attempt is made to locate all family survivors. In wills, the only relatives or persons mentioned are those that the person making the will wanted to include. Inheritance probably played a more important role in the ecomomy during colonial times than in any other period in American history. The economy depended on the "family firm" or farm almost exclusively and inheritance determined the distribution among family members. Too wide a distribution of resources and control might jeopardize business operations. Keeping a firm or farm intact had its appeal. Betty used the following definitions: Testate . A will is made. The maker of the will could ignore laws of distribution if he wished. Intestate . No will was left. The laws of the colony or state took over the distribution. Intestacy Laws . Enacted by each colony or state. Probate . The County Court was responsible for the distribution of propery after the death of its owner, whether there was a will or not.

Tell The Net Net Margaret Marsh, Ph.D., is a professor of history at Temple University, and her sister, Wanda Ronner, M.D., is an obstetrician gynecologist in Philadelphia. Together, they sought a grant from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, funded by Ortho, to study nineteenth-century surgical and instrumented interventions for infertility in the United States. They began working on Empty Cradle the year after their presentation at the ACOG's 1989 meeting. The authors' intellectual traditions combined with their obvious sensitivity to their topic has yielded a highly readable and persuasive book. They succeed in their aim in producing Empty Cradle to offer a useful history of infertility in the United States countering in particular three claims: that infertility is rising in incidence, that surgical intervention is a new phenomenon, and that women are victimized by reproductive medicine. Empty Cradle is constructed simply, discussing infertility in terms of social context and available medical care, primarily during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Marsh and Ronner also offer an interesting history of the treatment of infertility in particular, from early and misguided attempts to "correct" female anatomy surgically to today's

    Extractions: I'm afraid that I can't recommend this book. That doesn't happen very often, but I didn't care for this book. I'm not here to run down authors and their books, but I do want to give legitimate reviews that give examples of why I don't or do like certain books. What I was looking for was a "This Is Everyday Life in Colonial Times" type of book. I wanted pictures of what people wore, what they ate, what they did all day, how they accomplished whatever it was they were trying to accomplish ... you know, something to make colonial times seem real. For the most part this book does fulfill that need. There are many photos of actors in authentic dress. It appears that many photos were taken at Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown/Yorktown, and Plimoth Plantation which I believe are all living history museums.
