Wright Street 333-0036 www.grad.uiuc.edu FINANCIAL AID FOR PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENTS Financial aid for graduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is available in the form of: Teaching, research, graduate, and pre-professional graduate assistantships (including those funded by Federal Work Study) Fellowships (including traineeships) Grants Loans HOW TO APPLY: A single form, the APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE COLLEGE , submitted to your graduate department, ensures consideration for all fellowships and assistantships administered by the University. Order of preference may be indicated on the application. The application includes basic information about you as a candidate, your personal statement, three letters of reference, and transcripts. Some programs may request additional information as part of the application. A departmental committee, after considering the application, may nominate you for a fellowship to the Graduate College, which makes the final selections. The Graduate College administers most of the available fellowships. The departments are responsible for appointing teaching, research, graduate, and pre-professional graduate assistants. TO BE CONSIDERED FOR FELLOWSHIPS: You must apply for admission as early as possible, preferably during the fall semester. Departments have different application deadlines, and some occur as early as January. You should check with your prospective program for its deadline. Be sure that your application is complete and all reference letters arrive on time. Departments may accept requests for financial aid on any schedule; however, many departments make financial aid awards concurrently with admissions, so it is wise to have all materials in by the admissions deadline. Most fellowships are awarded to students who begin their graduate studies in the fall.

Extractions: Home Admission Financial Aid Smith's resources for financial aid include grants, campus jobs, and loans. A student's financial aid package will include one or more of these. A loan and a job (considered self-help) are usually the first components of an aid package; remaining need is met with grant aid. An average package totals more than $19,000 for traditional-aged students. The ratio of self-help to grant will increase as you progress toward your degree. Grant Aid Grants are funds given to first-year and transfer students with no requirement of repayment or work time in exchange. Most Smith College grants come from funds given for this purpose by alumnae and friends of the college and by foundations and corporations. The federal and state governments also provide assistance through need-based grants, such as Federal Pell Grants and state scholarships. Smith receives an allocation each year for Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants and for state-funded Gilbert Grants for Massachusetts residents. Smith Grants: College grants are donated by alumnae, foundations, and friends of the college. You may be asked to write to the donor of the fund if your grant is supplied by a Smith alumnae club or named scholarship.

Spelman College in Atlanta has been selected as one of the thirty-nine colleges to receive funding from the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment to implement programs focused on religion and spirituality. The school, which was awarded a five-year, $2 million grant by the Endowment, is one of two historically black colleges and one of the two women's colleges to receive an award in this round of grantmaking. Spelman's new program, Sisters Center for WISDOM: Women in Spiritual Discernment of Ministry, aims to increase student, faculty, and staff awareness of and knowledge about religious vocations, spirituality, and ethical leadership; recruit and retain students pursuing the ministry as a vocation; expand the college's related course offerings; and establish connections with religious groups in the community. The program also is designed to increase research and scholarship on black women, religion, and spirituality and examine the gender-based disparities and inequities that have affected society and the church in the past. "Although women represent 75 percent of church membership, they are disproportionately represented in senior positions in the Black church," said the Rev. Lisa Rhodes, a dean at the college. "The grant will enable us to develop programs that help students explore career choice and vocation as a calling, and religious leadership and pastoral ministry as a viable vocational option."

Morris and Alvirda Hyman Hall Financial support for the Foundation comes from individuals, businesses, civic groups, community organizations, and other foundations. To raise funds for its endeavors, the Foundation conducts a range of programs, many of which go well beyond fund-raising. The Annual Benefit Luncheon, a gathering of regional business, political, and cultural leaders, is one example. The Foundation facilitates grants, gifts, planned gifts, corporate funds, gifts-in-kind, and a host of other donation vehicles. Many donations are made with a specific purpose: to honor an individual (living or deceased), for example, or perhaps to fund a specific type of scholarship. Many gifts are left unrestricted to allow the Foundation to identify areas of need.
