Extractions: COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS A.C.T.-American College Testing The American College Testing program began in 1959. In 1999, over 1 2 million students have taken the tes this year. It is accepted by 85% of all colleges/universities across the United States. The four tests administered in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science give students a composite or average score between 1 and 36. Each test is weighted equally. Average scores are between 17 and 23. All colleges/universities in Michigan accept the ACT as an entrance exam. The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor prefers that students achieve a composite score of 25 or above for acceptance in most programs, and it has the most rigorous admissions criteria in the State of Michigan. Most guidance counselors in Michigan recommend that students take the ACT towards the end of their Junior year in high school so they can take as much Math, Science and English as possible prior to submitting their 6 semester transcript to colleges/universities. Students may re-test as many times as they wish; 77% scored at or above their previous score; 24% scored 1 point higher, 22% scored exactly the same, 18% scored 2 points higher, 15% scored 3 or more points higher, 13% scored 1 point lower, 6% scored 2 points lover and 2% scored 3 or more points lower. The PLAN is a practice test for the ACT and is generally given to 10th grade students for a fee of $8 each fall; it was formerly called the P-ACT. Students who take the PLAN test in the State of Michigan score 1.8 points higher on the ACT Composite than non-PLAN test takers.

The ACT, SAT I, and SAT II are tests used by colleges in combination with your class rank, high school curriculum, recommendations and sometimes essays, to determine the probability of your success at their college and therefore your acceptance to their institution. Sometimes your score determines placement in college courses. Most colleges will accept either the ACT or the SAT, but one should check. The tests are offered several Saturday mornings a year and may be taken more than once. Test registration packets are available in the CRC and are to be mailed by you to complete your registration.
