Cockatoos cockatoos. To too or Not to too? by Kim Bear. cockatoos will range greatly in price and size, although theres not necessarily a correlation. http://www.aviannetwork.com/cockatoos/
Extractions: by Kim Bear Is there anything sweeter and cuddlier than a cockatoo? Probably not. Is there anything noisier and more destructive? Probably not! Cockatoos have real a Jekel-and-Hyde thing going: they can be loving, fun and absolutely adorable, but they can also be nippy, naughty and absolutely aggravating! How do you know if you can handle such a creature? Do you even want to try? Is it worth it? Usually, yesit is. But dont rush into anything! This is one pet-purchasing decision that should never be taken lightly! There are many species of cockatoos, ranging in colors from pure white to majestic black, but only a few species are really appropriate for "ownership". Some are just too rare and uncommon. The ones youre most likely to encounter for sale are (in no special order): umbrellas, Moluccans, Goffins, bare-eyeds, rosebreasteds (Galahs) and various subspecies of greater and lesser sulfur cresteds. Cockatoos will range greatly in price and size, although theres not necessarily a correlation. For example, umbrellas are fairly large and plentiful and will often be a lot cheaper than the smaller, less common rosies. You dont need to think that bigger is better when it comes to cockatoos (or any parrot, really). Bigger does tend to mean more noise and mess, but that sort of goes without saying. What about personality? If cockatoos are so loud and messy, why would anyone ever want one? Because they can be the most loving of all the parrots, and possess a wonderful clownish quality that makes them the center of the room! Cockatoos are extremely playful and animated, and will go out of their way to make you pay attention to them, even if it means dancing, laughing, or hanging upside down by one toe with crest fully displayed. They love a good cuddle session, and probably would let you hold and pet them all day long. Their intelligence makes them one of the more mischievous pets you may have, and youll find that most cockatoos have a fair talent for speech. That squeaky-baby voice is one of their most endearing qualities, along with those big brown eyes and almost ever-present smile.

Cockatoos cockatoos. cockatoos are native to Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific islands. Most freeranging species are considered threatened http://www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/brochure/cockatoos.htm
Extractions: COCKATOOS Vital Statistics Body length: 12-28 in Body weight: 300-1100 g Age of sexual maturity: Small = 1-2 yr Medium = 3-4 yr Large = 5-6 yr Average life span: 6-10 yr Maximum life span: 80 yr What to Expect from Your Cockatoo Cockatoos are appreciated as companion birds because they enjoy "cuddling." Cockatoos are like small children - they can be charming and may try to "steal the show." Care must be taken to avoid spoiling these birds. They require so much attention that they can be noisy and destructive if improperly socialized. Imprinted cockatoos may become excessively possessive of their owners, leading to aggression toward others, unpredictability and other vices such as feather picking. Because of these problems cockatoos are not recommended as a first bird or to people who spoil their pets. Cockatoos have some capacity to mimic but their voice is not as clear as other parrots. Reference - Moluccan Cockatoos: Learn Before You Leap Moluccan cockatoos Learn Before you Leap Layne David Dicker. Most bird lovers can remember their first encounter with a Moluccan cockatoo. http://www.netpets.com/birds/reference/behavioral/moluccan.html
Extractions: Learn Before you Leap Layne David Dicker Most bird lovers can remember their first encounter with a Moluccan cockatoo. In fact, the encounter may be the reason they became bird lovers in the first place. There is simply no bird as captivating in appearance, temperament, intellect or voice. I remember the first one that I saw. I still have him. But my bird, Hitchcock, is one of the few lucky ones. Because they are so spectacular, they are often purchased by novices with a high limit on their credit card and no idea what it takes to keep a Moluccan happy, occupied, quiet (a relative term when used with 'toos), healthy, sweet and trusting. That was me, but I took the considerable time and learned whatever I needed to learn to give him the best home possible. Most people don't, and their birds are in basements, attics and garages all over the world. The thrust of this article isn't to say that Moluccans shouldn't be kept as companion animals and that breeders should stop producing them. Just the opposite. We need all the Moluccans and Moluccan lovers we can get, but they MUST be carefully bred and socialized birds in the homes of informed people. First of all, and on a lighter note, is the pronunciation of "Moluccan". Back in my novice days, I fell into the "Mul-ah-kin" group, with the middle syllable rhyming with lock, wok or Spock (going for the Trekkie vote there). I was shortly informed that it was "Mul-uk-kin" as in yuck, muck or schmuck; the pronunciation that I use to date. However, here to throw a wrench into my linguistic bliss is Phoebe Linden, breeder/writer/behaviorist extraordinaire, who pronounces it "Mul-oo-kin", as sounded in who, kook or blue. Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone, the subject of which is a proper noun, used frequently, and the two of you have conspicuously different pronunciations of this noun? It is hysterical. Everything is a nonsequitor because it sounds like you are talking about two entirely different things.

Cockatoos Eating Mandarins Return to the Gardening in Oz Forum Post a FollowUp cockatoos eating mandarins. Follow-Up Postings RE cockatoos eating mandarins. http://www.au.gardenweb.com/forums/load/ozgard/msg0504461516570.html
Extractions: Return to the Gardening in Oz Forum Post a Follow-Up Posted by W Sydney ( My Page ) on Mon, May 3, 04 at 4:46 Somebody was asking me how to keep cockatoos from eating their mandarins. They snap the stem just above the fruit but dont really eat the fruit. They snapped off 7 last night from a small tree, and the lady is worried they will wreck all the fruit before it ripens (It is still very green). Any ideas? Would a net be any good? I told her to leave the damaged fruit on the ground, hoping they will eat those ones rather than snapping off more from the tree. Follow-Up Postings: i've heard of blowing up old bladders from winecasks and tying them on to trees, like kites. this may scare them off. some people just tie plastic shopping bags on as they rattle in the breeze. you will probably have to change things over every couple of days as they are very cunning and smart. Newblackpalm.html Black Palm cockatoos Probosciger Aterrimus. Genus Probosciger, from proboscis= elongation of the face Species Aterrimus, from atter http://www.breedersblend.com/blackpalms1.html
Extractions: The Palm Cockatoos' distribution, indicated in red, ranges from parts of New Guinea, the Aru Islands and the Cape of York Peninsula in Northern Australia. There are considered to be 3 subspecies, which are mainly different in body size and crest. The Aterrimus which is the nominate subspecies is the smallest and ranges in body weight from 540 grams to 825 grams in the males and 500 grams to 675 grams in the females. They are between 55 to 60 cm. in length. The Stenlophus is larger than the aterrimus and slightly smaller than the Goliath, but I have not been able to find any definitive information on this subspecies except that it is written that it is similar in size and has a smaller crest than the Goliath. The Goliath is the largest of the three, ranging in body weight from 1000 grams to almost 1300 grams in the males and 850 grams to around 1000 grams in the females. I have heard reports of 1300 gram males but none have been confirmed. Their body length is between 60 to 70 cm. The males and females not only differ in body weight and size but there is a dramatic difference in the size and shape of the head. The maxilla or upper mandible is much more delicate in the females and the red skin patches are much larger in proportion to the size of the head in the males. In general the coloring of these birds is the same between the males and the females. Their plumage is black to dark gray with bright red cheek patches which are not feathered but are bare skin that changes in intensity with excitement and increased blood flow to the small capillaries laying under the surface of the skin.

WE WILL SPEND WHATEVER TIME IS NECESSARY TO FULLY INFORM YOU AND EDUCATE YOU HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BIRD POST SALE CONSULTATIONS ENCOURAGED. COMPANION BIRDS ARE HAND FED AND LOVINGLY SOCIALIZED LARGE MACAWS: COCKATOOS: We provide lodging for our sold birds when owners have to leave town Hand-feeding technique consists of holding the newborn macaw or cockatoo and syringe feeding very two hours until they are about two weeks old. For another period of weeks the baby macaws and cockatoos require syringe feeding every three hours. At about three months they only require three syringe feedings a day and begin eating on their own. At four to six months they go through the difficult process of weaning. It is never advisable to buy a bird until it is fully weaned; because a poorly weaned bird can later develop nutritional and or behavioral problems. Knowing you have bought a bird from competent professionals who have mastered the developmental process is critical. Fledged birds fly daily in well-equipped atrium for muscle development and socialization. Putting the bird into the flight develops their muscle strength. The bird learns to fly and socializes outside five hours daily; learning to bathe in a pool/waterfall, climb, play with toys, look for food and solve problems. This flight is attached to our living room so we can supervise continually.
