The large parrots as well as the smaller species are remarkable pets and family members. They are excellent companions, and a constant source of entertainment. Parrots are sometimes misunderstood. Some people believe that they are unaffectionate and not cuddle worthy. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Parrots make great pets and companions for a number of reasons. Parrots that have been accustomed to change are very adaptive to new environments and readily accept changes in schedule. Birds are very cuddly animals. They love to be petted and stroked, and need attention, affection, and discipline. Without discipline, you could end up with a very spoiled, demanding bird. When you look into those eyes, you can see the intelligence and playfulness waiting to be brought out, not to mention the love, devotion, and loyalty.

Extractions: Cockatoos are generally the most gentle of all the birds. They are one of the best family pets - in the bird world - you can have. They are known to have the best and most stable temperament of all the birds. Basically, they are like the yellow Lab to the bird world. They are also like having another child. They will sleep with you, cuddle and talk with you. They are great with kids, and a bird that you can do most anything with. They love attention. Their mental capacity is equivalent to that of a five-year-old. This not only means that they are capable of learning like a child, they also need discipline, just like a small child. They are the most trainable birds, but just like a kid, the Cockatoo can be emotional, cry and throw temper tantrums. Often, they only do what they want to do. Some of the Lessors, like the Citron, can even be a little high-strung or nervous. Cockatoos are one of the hardest birds to wean, and it generally takes about four months or more. They tend to be very clingy and dependent at this age. Some baby Cockatoos will cry like a small child. To make them more independent, they again need discipline during these times. Sometimes though, nothing will work and it requires some self-control to walk away and let them cry it out. Usually, after reaching one year of age, their voices change and their cries become very raspy and not so loud. Generally, they subside completely.

While they feed on the ground, eating seeds, nuts and grain, they post look-outs in the tops of tall trees to sound the alarm if any danger approaches. They are very clever birds and wonderful mimics, - a white cockatoo can even learn to mimic your voice!, - and the vivid colour of their sulphur yellow crest is absolutely fantastic.

Extractions: Our 2001 trip was to Australia to see wild cockatoos, target species, the Palm Cockatoo. In Australia this is to be found in and about the Iron Range Park, Queensland in the Northeast of the continent. Compared with our usual South America trips, this was a very cushy run. You can drink the tapwater, the cities are modern, clean and orderly (if boring for that) and of course everyone speaks English. There is an extensive rail and sealed highway system. We flew with the Indonesian national airline, Garuda, (King of the Eagles and the mount of Rama). They were cheap, there was ample legroom, the food was OK and the cabin staff were excellent. Timekeeping however was abysymal, every flight was late by many hours.
