    Extractions: by Brian Bush Author's Note: When concerning reptiles, the terms poisonous and venomous require redefining. Poison is toxic if inhaled or ingested. The only poisonous reptiles known in Australia are the Green Turtle (possibly) and the Hawksbill Turtle (definitely). The poison, named chelonitoxin, causes similar symptoms to ciguatera poisoning. More people have probably died on this earth as a result of consuming turtle flesh than ever has been the case from snakebite in Australia. There are no reported deaths from turtle poisoning here since 1945. Venom is generally harmless if ingested but toxic when it comes in contact with the underlying tissue normally protected by the skin. Venomous animals have to break the skin with body-spines, stings or teeth (includes fangs in spiders and centipedes). The only venomous reptiles found in Australia are snakes. For too long we have been telling the world, as well as each other, that Australia's snakes are the most venomous. On what evidence do we make this assumption? Solely on their ability to kill mice! What a joke! The basis for the following discussion and points of view are personal experience, comments heard and questions asked during my time lecturing on venomous animals as well as a perusal of the relevant literature. I might just mention here that I have never lectured to mice!

    Extractions: This classic cobra has a distinctive mark on the neck hood, variable in shape but often a single or a pair of circles. When disturbed, it spreads its neck laterally to form a distinct hood, its hood is proportionally larger than the King Cobra’s. The eye-like markings is believed to deter attacks to its back. Classification: Family Elapidae. As the coloration is so variable, many forms have been considered to represent different species, but recent research has shown that all non-spitting cobras in the region represent just a single, variable species. It is active mainly at dusk and during the night but it may be seen basking during the day. It hunts toads, snakes, birds, and small mammals.

Its venom is not as toxic as other cobras but it is dangerous to humans because it can inject a much larger amount of venom. Drop for drop, a King Cobra's venom is actually less lethal than a Common Cobra's. However, it injects as much as 6-7ml of venom per bite, enough to kill an elephant, or 20 people. However, despite its size and reputation for ferocity, the King is not aggressive and actually prefers to flee where possible. It only attacks people when it is cornered, in self defence or to protect its eggs. Throughout its entire range from India to Indonesia, the King causes fewer than five human deaths a year, about one-fifth as many as caused by rattlers in North America.     Extractions: The King Cobra averages 3.7 m in length but is known to grow to 5.5 m. It is olive and brown or black in color. Usually, there are yellowish or white cross bars on its body. Throat is light yellow or cream-colored. The King Cobra is regarded as a fierce and aggressive snake, and its length and size give it an awesome appearance. King Cobras eat primarily other snakes, such as rat snakes, kraits, other cobras and pythons. Some specimens develop specification for a single species as food resource. This snake is active by day. Prey are located by odor with the forked tongue and shortly before final attack, the snake relies on its eyesight. Prey is swallowed still living and process may take hours. The anatomy of King Cobra’s head, allows the capture and swallowing of prey thicker than the head. Male and female cobras are thought to pair for life. They cooperate to find and defense of a nest site. Females protecting a clutch are very aggressive and attack may occur without prior warning. Usually, King Cobras prefer to escape in case of human approaching. Breeding usually occurs from January through April. King Cobras are oviparous and lay 21-40 eggs. The female pushes leaves and branches into a nest pile where the eggs are incubated by the elevated temperatures of decomposition. Incubation takes place during spring and summer, hatching in the fall. The babies are black with yellow or white cross bars on the body and tail. Juveniles are able to hunt immediately after hatching.
