The briefest look at the Evolution of the American Party System reveals this perception as mistaken. So-called "third" parties have been an integral feature of this process. As proportionately less qualified voters chose to participate in elections, those parties tended to expand their base. Less to the demands of governing and the placating of existing power structures, the third parties have had far more innovative political platforms , advocating popular issues long beore the major parties have even bothered to denounce them.
