And speaking of Christian names, there now seems to be a marked reluctance on the part of officialdom to use the term Christian name; instead, when filling official forms we are asked for our surname, and then for our first name or names. Christian names are often said to run in families; that is, that the same Christian names keep on recurring in particular families in generation after generation. For centuries Mac Carthys bore such Christian names as Ceallachan, Cormac and Saerbreathach. These names are still popular with the Mac Carthys, but in their anglicised forms of Callaghan, Charles and Justin. Among the O'Briens it is not unusual to find the Christian name Kennedy. The history of this latter name goes back more than a thousand years, for Brian Boru's father was named Cinneide, and Brian was the ancestor of the O'Briens. Rory keeps on repeating itself in the O'Connor family. Almost everybody must have heard of Rory O'Connor, the last Ad R', or High King of Ireland; and that name kept on echoing down to the present century.

Extractions: Let us know what you think Home ODDS and ENDS From west to east AS I was preparing to commence this week's notes, a piece of verse, appropriate to this time of year, which we learned at school in the now distant past, came into my mind. I wonder if anybody else recalls the piece? This is it: January scatters snow, And December brings the Christmas star. Last week I wrote about the Ballyguiltenane Rural Journal. This week my subject is the parish journal called "Oola - Past and present." The whole width - or is it length? - of County Limerick lies between the two places, Ballyguiltenane being almost on the Kerry border, Oola almost right on the Tipperary border. And if, as I stated last week, the Ballyguiltenane journal has a West Limerick - North Kerry 'bias,' the Oola journal has an East Limerick-West Tipperary 'blas'. Dermot O'Gorman edits the Oola journal, and in an editorial he refers to, among other matters, the planned construction of the Pallasgreen/ Oola/ Monard/ Tipperary/ Bansha by-pass, which will provide more efficient and speedy access for road freight from the West of Ireland to the ports of the south-east.

Extractions: Gary Cunningham's Bayonet Point's Updated Nov.1, 2003 Bayonet Points #13 - November, 2003 Backcuts and Runouts In some of the sections covering the newer bayonets, especially the M7, I commented on the shape of the section where the bevel of the true edge blends into the blade at the ricasso. Generally collectors call this area the backcut, the military term (at least recently) is runout. General wisdom in the past has been that the backcut is at a nearly 90 degree angle to the true edge. Any other angle, especially a long sloping cut, has been very suspect and generally has been felt to indicate a commercial item rather than military issue. Recently I was able to obtain a copy of the latest specifications for the M7 bayonet (which is still being ordered from time to time). This specification sheet shows a curved runout, with a note stating: "Configuration of runout may vary - Sharp corner not permissible." This change shows a revision date of July 1, 1974 which means that all M7 bayonets contracted for following that date will have a runout with a curved shape, or at least a curved corner. This would include bayonets made by General Cutlery, Imperial, and Ontario. So now the collector, finding a M7 by one of these makers with a curved or sloped runout will not be able to determine if it is military issue or commercial production. Just another tribulation for the bayonet collector. This revision also apparently deletes the requirement for the cutouts in the tang, which was another area that some of us used to try to determine if a bayonet was military issue or not.

The book swap and auction raised almost $100 for the group's kitty. From all reports, there was a fair degree of selling and exchanging of books and magazines prior to the auction. President Jerry Jensen barely managed to keep the lid on some spirited bidding afterward. The big demand item was a copy of David Chandler's Campaigns of Napoleon that went for $58. The February meeting saw the Round Table return to its roots as Program Co-ordinator Morley Verdier organized a round-robin of small speeches. Members had been given a word or phrase prior to the meeting and asked to prepare a short informative speech on the subject. We hope to be able to bring you some extracts in a later newsletter. B) In 1996, The RenFaire Audience refused to show up, having seen in '95 that the only visible difference between RenCo and the nearby Paramount's Great America is that at GA, there are roller coasters and the Klingons in attendance get paid instead of just showing up in equal number. This Also does grant that one or two people did show up, but I have a Very vague and uncertain memory that this number was almost outnumbered by the staff. C) In 1997, REC did indeed do a deliberate campaign of plastering the Entire San Francisco Bay Area with advertisement after advertisement, on buses,. across multiple pages of individual newspaper issues, for day after day after day, in train stations, across More busses, and even through what were Very cheesy and telling radio and television ads . . . They may even miss her anchovy paste and "stinky cheese" in the library refrigerator. She met her husband Tim "on the school bus" when they were sophomores in high school. Elliott graduated from Tufts University with a major in medieval history and a minor in art history. While Tim studied at Harvard Law School, Page worked in the library there for three years. Later, she worked in libraries of Alexandria public schools her children Schuyler and Farar attended. "Children and books … beat that for a combination," Elliott recalls in soft, Southern tones.

Below are just a few examples. Fort Clinch Historic State Park Fort Clinch - Fernandina Beach, Florida Historic Fort Clinch, circa 1850, located on Floridas northeast coast at the tip of Amelia Island at Fort Clinch State Park, is perhaps the finest remaining example of third system forts remaining in the U.S. Severe erosion on the shore surrounding Fort Clinch had threatened this remarkable structure for many years. The east side of the fort was in danger of collapse into the St. Marys Inlet, particularly during storm events. In 1998, the Florida Park Service, with the assistance of the parks support group Friends of Fort Clinch, secured a $2 Million grant through Florida DEPs Division of Beaches and Coastal Systems to develop and construct a solution. A series of T shaped finger groins were completed in May of 1999 providing unprecedented protection from the erosive effects of the Atlantic Ocean.
