Degree Programs 201 More Civil and environmental engineering is a profession which interfaces closely with society in the planning, design, construction, and management of facilities serving the needs of people. These activities include all transportation modes: highways, aerospace, rivers, and harbors; water resources, hydraulics, and coastal engineering; structures, mechanics, and geotechnical engineering; surveying, mapping, and photogrammetry; urban planning and development; water supply, wastewater treatment, and water-quality management; solid- and hazardous-waste disposal; and quality control and management of the air resources. A civil engineer may specialize in one or several of these activities and may further specialize in a particular function, such as design or management. The work frequently provides close associations with the legal profession, urban and regional planners, economists, public officials, biologists, chemists, financial consultants, architects, and system analysts. Education and practice require a consideration not only of the technological-science aspects of a particular problem but also of its relationship to social, economic, political, and environmental constraints. To accommodate these wide interests, the department is organized into six academic areas: construction management; transportation engineering; geotechnical engineering; structural engineering and mechanics; environmental engineering; and water resources, hydrology, and hydraulic systems.

Extractions: Fred is a civil engineer in a major city and responsible for the administration and management of the areas highway and bridge projects. His most recent job is providing a new roadway and bike path alongside a river. As part of the design process, he will go to the site and evaluate how to preserve the river, wetlands, and wildlife in the area. He will also work with the residents in the town to create the least disturbance to their land. Fred will also coordinate with Maria, another civil engineer, to test the soils and dispose of any environmentally hazardous material they find. As he works on the design of the road he will need to consult with the other engineers to create the bridges, bikeway, traffic signals, and other parts of the project. As a civil engineer, you will find yourself working in many diverse areas. Civil engineers design and build solutions to ensure the future. The civil engineer designs roads, bridges, irrigation systems, water treatment plants, transit systems, and airports. Civil engineering uses the latest concepts in technology to plan new communities, space satellites, and even toys and athletic equipment. Civil engineering works with many other occupations to make everyday life easier. As a civil engineer, you may:

SDSU Civil Engineering Program Virtually all that surrounds us, buildings, highways, dams, harbors, airports, bridges and tunnels, are designed and constructed by civil engineers. http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/psc/ab/civilengineering.htm
Extractions: What do the Great Wall of China, pyramids of Egypt, Roman aqueducts, Hoover Dam, Golden Gate Bridge, Sears Tower in Chicago and the network of U.S. interstate freeways all have in common? They are all engineering marvels, true testimonies to the genius of people, monuments of changing civilizations on our small planet. They are all civil engineering projects. Civil engineering is often called the "people-serving profession." Virtually all that surrounds us, buildings, highways, dams, harbors, airports, bridges and tunnels, are designed and constructed by civil engineers. It is hard to imagine the modern world today without complex systems that supply clean water to cities, remove sewage, control floods, transport people and goods, and reduce negative environmental impacts of pollution, noise, hazardous waste, etc. Great opportunities will exist in the transportation engineering area, where new technologies that use `smart highways' and `smart cars' will revolutionize our ways of combating the increasing traffic in our cities. New fast trains are being developed to offer an alternative to automobiles.

At the European Union level, ECCE aims to promote the highest technical and ethical standards, to provide a source of impartial advice, and promote co-operation with other pan-European organisations in the construction industry. ECCE also advises and influences individual governments and professional institutions, formulates standards and achieves a mutual compatibility of different regulations controlling the profession, and formulates standards for a European Code of Conduct of the Civil Engineering Profession and disciplinary procedures applicable throughout the Union. ECCE formulates guidelines to maintain and raise standards of civil engineering education, training and professionals competence, as well as assisting in achieving mutual compatibility of Euro codes, standards and regulations in the related industry and encouraging and improving levels of safety and quality in the industry.

Extractions: Bridges, buildings, stadiums, towers, dams, and power plants-even ski lifts and roller coasters-they're all big structures made out of steel, concrete, or wood. You can hardly go anyplace without finding one. And they're important for the way we live; travel; do business; get light, heat, and water; or just have fun. The Real Deal But how do these large structures do what they do? How can that bridge reach so far across the water and carry all those cars without falling down? How come that skyscraper doesn't blow over in a storm? How does the power plant make the electricity that comes to your house when you turn something on? How can the roller coaster put you through so many wild loops, turns, and drops and still be safe? Somebody had to design them to be strong enough, to move in the wind or to bend (but not too much!), and to make lots and lots of parts work together, so that everything turns out like it should. The people who do that are structural or civil engineers. They start with drawings that show the shape and size of the structure and the parts that go into it. The engineers also create detailed plans, called "specifications,"-"specs" for short-that show how each part has to be built for the whole thing to work. The plans also show what materials to use. Because a lot of math goes into the specs, an engineer does a lot of her work with a computer and a scientific calculator.
