Extractions: Ms. Florina's students wanted to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. It was a great opportunity to teach and learn! The students learned that Cinco De Mayo was not about Mexican Independence. It was a battle between Mexico and France. It took only 4,000 passionate loyal Mexicans soldiers to smash Napoleon and the French Army. The Mexican victory kept Napoleon from supplying arms to the U.S. Confederate Rebels, who were embroiled in their own civil war at the time. This Mexican triumph, helped the U.S. Union Army defeat the Confederate Army at Gettysburg fourteen months later.
Cinco De Mayo with them to teach them the dance. The outnumbered Mexicans on that fifth of May,defeated the French on that glorious day. That is what cinco de mayo is all http://pinecrestschools.com/canyon/photos/cinco/cinco2.htm
Extractions: Next, the audience enjoyed the third grader's dance performance of a popular salsa song called "Suavemente." Along with the music and dances of Mexico that play an important part in any Cinco de Mayo celebration, the flag of Mexico is also a big part of this special day. The Mexican flag reflects the vitality of the country's people. There are three vertical stripes which divide the flag, and their colors represent ideals that tie all Mexicans together. Fourth and fifth grader sang "Guantanamera," a song that many in the audience found familiar. Sixth graders danced to "Jesusita en Chihuahua" and a Spanish version of "Achy Breaky Heart" that had everyone clapping to the beat. Seventh graders danced a song called "Asereje" and brought teachers up on stage with them to teach them the dance. The outnumbered Mexicans on that fifth of May, defeated the French on that glorious day. That is what Cinco de Mayo is all about. Puebla and Benito Juarez and a Mexican shout told the world what they did not know, that Mexicans would fight for their Mexico. A special surprise came at the end of our Cinco de Mayo program. "Yeguada Herrera" performed for the audience with their wonderful Andelusian horses. The performance began with the carrying in of the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States, which were handed to three of our teachers. The Herreras are parents at our school. One of the students that performed on the horse was Javier, a 6th grader, alongside his father. The other solo peformer was Marcial Contreras. The Herrera's have three children Javier, Marilyn and Abraham. All three children perform on the horses. The mother Esther Herrera also performs.

Extractions: AyAyAyAy!!!!!! The "gritos" heard round the world on Cinco de Mayo are primal screams commemorating a struggle against imperialism. May 5th celebrates an 1865 battle at Puebla, Mexico, pitting primarily Mexican indigenous forces against a powerful, imperialist, tax-collecting French army. September 15-16, on the other hand, are the days that Mexicans and Central Americans celebrate independence from 300 years of Spanish tyrannical rule. Cinco de Mayo is not an official U.S. holiday, nor should it be, though it is said that it has become in effect more a Mexican American celebration than a Mexican one one that reflects the reality of living marginally in the United States. At the same time, Cinco de Mayo is in danger of becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the beer industry, an unofficial holiday with a white sale and a happy hour. Instead, Cinco should be proclaimed a day of cultural and spiritual independence for people of Mexican descent and Central Americans, too living in the United States. Because of demographic trends, Cinco as a community ritual will increase in importance. Here, because that historical battle is distant, perhaps Cinco will evolve into a day where many kinds of victories large and small are commemorated as well as the ongoing movements for dignity and equality. This is already the case in many communities where these celebrations manifest in different forms from ceremonies, essay contests and awards to political forums, educational conferences, parades and cruising.

Extractions: Its Easy to Teach Foreign Languages at Home How can you introduce your homeschooler to the world community while increasing his/her written and verbal communication skills? Theres only one answer: teach your child to speak and understand a new language. With a little preparation and the right tools, you dont need to be fluent in a foreign language to t each it effectively. Here are some simple tips to help you get started: Head to your local library to find foreign language picture books with pronunciations. Better yet, ask the audio-visual desk if they have books on tape so that your child can hear a native speaker. Check out videos and movies with a bilingual approach... or, for more advanced students, subtitles. Look in the newspaper for local events related to holidays around the world. Attending a Cinco de Mayo event for instance, is a great way to learn Mexican songs and activities. Watch sports such as soccer on a foreign language television station and try to follow the commentary. Plan an activity with a family from another part of the world. Ask that child and his/her parent to speak in their native language for the afternoon.

Extractions: Last Updated: May 6, 2004, 10:45:18 AM PDT In Planada schools, administrators said Cinco de Mayo events take place for two reasons. "The kids love it," said Assistant Principal Ildefonso Nava, and it is important to celebrate the Mexican culture. The middle school's student population is about 90 percent Hispanic, and many of those children are firstor second-generation from Mexico, he said. Aside from the Cinco de Mayo tradition, dozens of students learned traditional folklorico dancing in an after-school program. They showed off their talents in front of their schoolmates Wednesday. Teacher Veronica Enriquez learned to dance growing up in Mexico. She came to Merced when she was 14 years old, and now teaches her students to celebrate their heritage.
