Although Mexico's official independence day is el Dieciseis de Septiembre [September 16th], Cinco de Mayo is also considered a day of great importance. Having gained its independence from Spain by 1821, Mexico continued to be a hotbed of unrest. Also, if you choose to play a game that requires teams, and you have an odd number of children, one person will need to go twice. Ask for a volunteer and if one doesn't surface you might want to leave it up to the team to choose who they think will be the fastest. How To Play: Before playing explain to the children that Benito Juárez, a Zapotec Indian, was born and raised in extreme poverty. With hard work, determination, and strong love for his country, Juárez became the president of Mexico and defeated the French, who had occupied the country for five years. Played similar to Simon Says. The player up is "Benito Juarez". Player will say "Benito Juarez says hop on one foot". The children will hop on one foot. Player will say "Stop". The children are to keep hopping on one foot until player says "Benito Juarez says stop". Repeat for additional activities such as take one baby step forward, step backwards, turn around, sit down. Sometimes Benito Juarez will say "Benito Juarez says" and sometimes he won't. It's a fun game to play with young children. Supplies: Chalkboard

Historical Background "After Mexico gained it's independence from Spain in 1821, it faced internal power struggles that left it in a volatile state of rebellion and instability for years." (Internet: Pasmanick, 1992) In 1846, the Mexican government, under the dictator Santa Anna, went to war with the United States. As an outcome of that war, Mexico lost a large amount of landthe land we now know as Texas. In 1854, Juan Alvarez and his troops led a successful revolt to drive Santa Anna out of power. One of Alvarez's strongest supporters was a man by the name of Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian leader. In 1855, Juarez became the minister of Justice under the new regime and issued two new controversial laws. One denied the right of the church and military courts to try civilian cases and the other made the sale and distribution of church lands legal. Many people disagreed with these laws and for three years a civil war raged between the two sides.

It was a great victory because it was unexpected. France at that time was still very powerful and had many troops in Mexico. Why were French troops in Mexico? Let's go back a few years. Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1810. But the Mexican War with the United States and the Mexican Civil War almost entirely wiped out the Mexican Treasury. During these wars, Mexico had borrowed heavily from European countries, including France. In the early 1860s, Mexico stopped paying France back. France's answer was to invade Mexico.

Extractions: Cinco de Mayo in the United States? This holiday is comparable to Memorial Day or Veterans Day celebrations in the United States. All these holidays are military in nature, because they were born from battles or wars where thousands of fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters, stepped into the line of fire to defend the principles of Liberty and Justice for all. Similar to the American Holidays, El 5 De Mayo in México is a day off from work. Mexican people celebrate with parades and "fiestas" all over the country. Government personnel take this occasion to remember those principles and the people who died in the battles which gave us our freedom of speech, our liberty to congregate, and the justice that usually prevails and defends us from harm; be it foreign or domestic. Just like Memorial Day, El 5 De Mayo is an important day to many families whose loved ones died in a particular battle or war. Everything is always more meaningful, when we lose something to get it.
