Kathy Najimy and performance artist Dan Finnerty challenged STOMP to a dance duel with the help of Cher’s choreographer Bubba Carr. Fight choreographer Dan Southworth (“The Scorpion King,” “The Tuxedo”) staged a kick-butt samurai girl fight between Danielle Burgio and Lauren Kim. There was also an emotional tribute to Gregory Hines featuring world-class tap soloist Mark Mendonca. Tony Award-nominated actress Valarie Pettiford led a musical-comedy ensemble with dancers transforming themselves into music choreographed by Raymond del Barrio.     Extractions: Choreography is a simple tool being made even simpler by technology and communication in the 21st century. Choreography is a part of what goes into the effort of showing and doing dance. It is a collaborative part of dance, but it is not dance any more than composition is music. Music is music. Is dance influenced by choreography? I am not influenced by the choreographies but more by the techniques, concepts and artistic visions of choreographers. Cunningham is a mentor for me because he has continued to investigate and collaborate, not because I can recognize his signatures from the past. He continues to promote dancing in spite of the limits of his choreographyies. In music composition we are left with music. In dance choreography we are left with dance. If I am left with only the choreography or the composition it is history. A public does not need an education to engage with a dance or music performance if they are left with the dance or the music. They do if they are going to be left with a load of historical references. Pauline is a postmodern artist first and a choreographer later. This is what makes her choreography valuable for another generation of dance artists in Holland. Choreography has absolutely nothing to do with dancing without this kind of process. I do not think that her choreographies alone are what we will value any more than the modernist works before her. But I do think that her artistic vision and her concepts need to be. By cutting Pauline Degroot out of the Dutch dance funding, we have cut a lineage of dance work for Dutch culture. What we have been left with is an empty title on a grant application that allows for anyone who can place a trained ballet dancer into a reasonably neat structure to be called a choreographer.

Under the direction and guidance of Professor Donald McKayle, the UCI Etude Ensemble has had the opportunity to partake in research regarding marketing and performance as professional dancers. In this field, technical training as well as exposure to the community of dance is essential in order to succeed. By traveling as a pre-professional dance company, the ensemble has had numerous opportunities to perform for/with top professionals in the field, take classes from master teachers, and audition for professional companies, increasing our marketability as dancers for the years following graduation. As chair of the Bare Bones Dance Theater, I am also heading research pertaining to concert performance and choreography. With the generous help from UROP, we are able to produce a dance concert, completely independent from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. This project includes finding a theater, stage managers, lighting designer, publicizing the event, auditioning the dancers, auditioning the pieces once the choreography is completed, raising extra money through fundraising for scholarships, creating a gala evening, obtaining music rights, and learning how to produce a professional dance concert. This is the fifteenth year that this project has been active in the undergraduate community and it continues to grow and improve each year.

    Extractions: I define modern (or contemporary) dance as a philosophy of dance, rather than a style. A modern dance choreographer uses every type of movement that the human body is capable of making to get the look, feel and meaning that he or she is looking for, to create meaningful or beautiful works of expression that communicate something to an audience, often expressing things that the audience members are feeling, but cannot express for themselves. It is moving art. Modern dance is an American approach to dance which began forming in the early 1900s. The approach was basically a reaction against the strict structure of Ballet and it's binding clothing. Since modern dance is more of an artistic rebellion than a new set of rules, it encompasses many styles. If you study the Jose Limon method, you will learn certain steps, if you study Eric Hawkins' method, you will learn different steps. Each choreographer, if they choose to go in their own direction, will have their own method. A painter doesn't usually limit herself to certain brushstrokes or certain colors just as a modern dance choreographer doesn't limit herself to certain types of moves. When I teach modern dance I focus on some of the movement concepts that are employed more often in modern dance than in other forms. The students will be using their Ballet, Irish, Ballroom, and Tap dancing skills in modern choreography, but for the most part I let them learn those skills in other classes.

Before 1900, most choreographers for dance were male. Theatrical dance in the first half of the twentieth century was dominated by female choreographers. The origins for this change are discussed. Meanwhile, social dancing before 1900 involved mainly dances with prescribed steps. Males appear to have been released from this straight-jacket (inadvertently) to do creative social dance choreography by Vernon Castle in 1911. Females were not released until some 50 years later (again, inadvertently) by Chubby Checker. Vernon Castle's method of dividing ballroom dances into "figures" may be viewed as the construction of a set of symbols. The mapping of these onto numerical digits is exemplified using figures from the modern Tango. Castle's catalysis of of the change from sequence dancing to ballroom dancing can then be viewed as a change from rational dancing (like rational numbers that have recurring groups of digits) to irrational dancing (like irrational numbers having digit sequences with no repetition). INTRODUCTION Ordinary people in society can involve themselves in dancing in either of two ways: watching the the performance of specially trained dancers. and/or participating themselves in social dancing. Over the last 200 years in Western society, substantial changes to the creation of dance in these spheres has occurred.
